Digital marketers are more enabled than ever to do pretty much anything on the web in their pursuit of getting more eyes, leads, and eventual customers. Countless tools exist that are intended to make a marketer’s life easier and more efficient, but no two products are exactly the same. How does a marketer differentiate between one and the other?

Demos, blog posts, and product features are intended to show off the best aspects of a tool, but they all sound the same or too hard to believe. What’s worse, marketers are being berated with “the next best thing” on a daily basis, which makes committing to one tool near impossible. Let’s make this all much easier, clear up the confusion, and dive into the best performing tools, no fluff.

Much More Than An Email Marketing Tool, Seriously

With a crowded email marketing and automation tools industry, GetResponse is a breath of fresh air. GetResponse is an all-in-one marketing tool that includes email marketing and automation, webinar platform, A/B testing functionality, mobile-ready landing pages, and a repository of 500+ form designs that’ll make any marketer pleased. SEMRush is one tool that offers almost too much power. A freemium tool, SEMRush starts their Pro plan off at $69.95/month, but most SMBs can easily get away with the free version.

Transform Your Simple Screen Recordings Like a Pro

The best part about Camtasia? Everything starts and ends in one place. No need to download multiple tools to record the right video, learn to use a fancy (and expensive) tool to edit it, and yet another tool to make it look beautiful and professional. Camtasia takes care of everything from A-Z, to turn your screen recordings into compelling videos.

Users can edit audio and visual separately, incorporate webcam voice and video, and add in additional videos throughout the process. Take control of your screen recording videos for $99 on Mac or $299 for PC, which is truly an amazing deal for such a robust video editing tool.

Get Content Ideas Instantly

Enter your keywords and a wise man in a gray cable knit sweater (aka the Seeker) will give you content ideas in the form of questions. Not only is this tool fun to use and beautiful to look at, but it also gives countless suggestions, saving any strapped marketer loads of time. You’ll never run out of ideas using Answer The Public, whether you like it or not. It’s a free tool that can expedite your content planning sessions by as much time as it probably took to knit that cable knit sweater.

Easily Attract and Sustain Your Ideal Twitter Following

Building a legitimate and useful Twitter following is no easy task in an age of countless bots and never-ending spam. Narrow helps–a lot. Using keywords, hashtags, and locations, Narrow helps identify your target audience and attracts relevant users to your profile. After all that, analytics help to improve audience retention and track overall performance. In their own words, “no-fluff analytics” is music to a marketer’s ears. Account-based pricing means $19/month for one account and $49/month for up to three accounts. Not bad for someone trying to build a social media following.

Enhancing Content Marketing With Videos

Effective for short attention spans
By placing videos on your website you provide visitors the possibility to absorb the data you intend in a much more « absorbable » method that is also easy-to-understand. This medium and method requires the least from the visitor, and that is what catches their attention the most. Shorter attention spans, and decreasing as we speak, has been the very immediate result of the digitised world. This said, it is crucial that your message is delivered in small portions that are easily digested, understood and processed by the majority of the ever-growing internet audience out there. Viewers are known to make instant connections, at least nearly, with material provided through visual platforms. Of course, this material has to be educational, engaging and entertaining. Video provides a promise that very little effort is needed from the consumer, making it far more possible that visitors will prefer to play a video than read through text. At a first glance, no text can be more tempting than a play icon.

Facebook doubles down on video as forecast worries investors

f8-facebook-mark-zuckerberg-0094.jpg

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg has made big investments in live video.

James Martin/CNET

How do you convince more people to record themselves and post videos on your social network? If you’re Facebook, you do it with scuba masks and pumpkins.

In the last few weeks, CEO Mark Zuckerberg has added new weapons to Facebook’s online video arsenal. They include masks, which allow people to add digital images — like scuba gear and pumpkins — to their faces. The company is also testing new camera software in Ireland with more photo and video filters. Those videos and photos disappear after you and your friends stop commenting on them.

If those new features sound a lot like what Snapchat does, it’s because they are. Facebook hasn’t been shy about cloning the popular mobile app, which lets you string together videos and photos that self-destruct after a period of time.

There’s an important reason for all that video investment. Facebook sees video as the future of its business.

Perhaps that future can’t come quickly enough. During a conference call Wednesday to discuss third-quarter earnings, Facebook CFO David Wehner said advertising growth would slow and expenses would grow in the next year.

That unnerved investors, who sent Facebook’s shares down 7 percent in after-hours trading.

But Zuckerberg assured them Facebook is anticipating the sea changes.

« Soon, we believe a camera will be the main way to share, » instead of the traditional text box, Zuckerberg said during the call. « We think its pretty clear video is only going to become more important. »

He added the camera features being tested in Ireland will also be coming to more countries. Zuckerberg boasted that Facebook is in a good position to become a video powerhouse because the company has the scale and computing power to make sure users can share and find videos with fewer technical stutters.

Facebook may be expecting slower growth, but it’s still raking in money. The company racked up sales of $7.01 billion in the months ended September 30, beating analyst estimates of $6.92 billion. Profit, minus some costs, was $1.09 a share, compared with estimates of 97 cents per share.

Facebook also said its user base jumped to 1.79 billion people a month.

Another reason Facebook is so eager to try out live-streaming and Snapchat-like video features: Most of that stuff is done on phones. And mobile is Facebook’s life blood.

In the third quarter, roughly 84 percent of the company’s $6.82 billion in ad revenue came from mobile ads. The company also said mobile-only monthly users surpassed 1 billion people for the first time.

But it’s video that’s been the talk around Facebook for a while. The centerpiece in its strategy is Facebook Live, a service that went live widely earlier this year that lets you live stream video directly to Facebook. In the past few months, everyone from Hamilton cast members to the Donald Trump campaign has turned to Facebook to broadcast in real time.

But the focus on video has prompted some tough philosophical questions, like what Facebook should and shouldn’t show.

In July, a Minnesota woman named Diamond Reynolds used the service to live-stream her fiance Philando Castile after he was shot by police. The next day, Facebook Live captured the scene as five Dallas police officers were gunned down during a peaceful demonstration.

HTML5 gaming studio Big Viking raises $21.75 million in funding …

Canada isn’t just the home of major blockbuster publishers and developers, it’s also home to some of the fastest-growing social-gaming studios.

As part of that trend, Toronto-based Big Viking Games reported today that it has attracted $21.75 in funding from Canadian financial institutions. The Royal Bank of Canada led the round with $18 million in financing alongside Export Development Canada and $3.75 million from BDC Capital’s Growth and Transition division. Big Viking plans to use that cash to expand its efforts building HTML5 games for the web that load instantaneously for players around the world.

Big Viking already has 100 employees, and that makes it by far the biggest independent Canadian studio. That team has already produced games like YoWorld and Fish World, which millions of players have tried over the last several years. And now the company wants to reinvest in its HTML5 strategy.

“Starting in 2012, we made the decision to make significant investments in HTML5 instant games,” Big Viking cofounder Albert Lai said in a statement. “We saw the potential of the technology and how it will define the future of mobile gaming and entertainment. Others have moved away from HTML5 due to the technical investment required, but we believe that open standards and more powerful devices will pave the way for a massive shift on mobile phones and tablets.”

HTML5 gaming grabbed headlines several years ago with the promise that it would enable developers to publish high-quality mobile games to the web without having to go through the Apple App Store or Google Play.

“While our focus on HTML5 has paid off with our Triple-A instant games that can be distributed on many powerful mobile platforms, such as messenger applications, we weren’t sure we could find the right investors that understood our vision in the early days,” said Lai. “Now that we have multiple million-dollar-budget titles in the works to distribute on new and upcoming platforms, investors can see how our business strategy is on track to change the future.”

Brightcove received the highest scores possible in 22 criteria, including Syndication and Distribution features, Custom Video Channel/Portal, User Generated Content, Sales Enablement Workflows, and Product Vision.

Today, we are loved by thousands of the world’s most innovative companies, who are helping us invent the future of digital experiences,” said David Mendels, CEO, Brightcove. “We believe that every organisation in the world will use video to market, sell and communicate and Brightcove is uniquely suited in both vision and scale to lead this transformation.”

HTML5 Coding Methodologies

HTML5 Coding Methodologies

Web developers have experienced many revolutions in recent years. The marked rise in the number of Web APIs has forced developers to constantly rethink their job description along with all of tasks that they do. Meanwhile, a plethora of new tools has emerged to capitalize on new technologies. It would not be an understatement to say that these tools have completely changed the way that HTML5 content is developed. The arsenal of tools to choose from ranges from boilerplates to performance tuning and building tools. While these tools have the potential to help us create content and apps more quickly and easily than previously, in order to develop in a smarter and better way, we should adopt a set of coding methodologies that foster a smoother development life cycle. In today’s article, we’ll examine a few of the latest coding methodologies that have found their way into web developers’ process.

Methodology vs. Best Practice

As a member of the Best Practices team in the Canadian Federal Government, I feel that I should elucidate on what the difference is between a methodology and a best practice.

A best practice is a process or procedure that is defined either informally of formally, and has one or more of the following attributes: efficient, cost-effective, fosters competitive advantage, optimizing (work, workflow, customer service, etc.). Informally defined best practices are those that have evolved naturally over time that may not be documented or embodied in policies and procedures documents.

A methodology tends to be associated with a documented process, framework or approach. For example, ITIL, Rational Unified Process, and Extreme Programming are all methodologies. But again, a methodology may not be documented; a process may have evolved into an unofficial or undocumented standard way of doing things, yet can still be considered a methodology.

The key difference is that a methodology may or may not be an actual best practice as a methodology may be chosen and implemented for a variety of reasons, many of which do not result in one or more of the key attributes listed above. A best practice, on the other hand, is a proven practice that is a methodology in its own right (practices are usually conducted within a process and comprised of tasks and methods), but one whose goal is to select the best methodology out of all known methodologies at that time.

Put another way, best practices assure best results, while methodologies do not necessarily guarantee them.

For the remainder of this article and series, I will present a set of methodologies which have in fact proven (insofar as is possible within a fairly short time frame) to be reliable, and, if not the best practice, then at least a good one!

Choosing the Right Tools

The days of coding HTML in a text editor are long gone. Even a total newbie can produce a great-looking web page with minimal effort by utilizing a modern HTML authoring tool. In fact, I would strongly discourage anyone from attempting to create a page from scratch. What with standards compliance, browser quirks, responsive design considerations, etc, all coming into play, it’s best to leave the markup and code generation to a specialized tool and concentrate instead on content.

Starting with the IDE (Integrated Development Environment), there is no such thing as an universal « best IDE ». It really comes down to personal choice, unless your web site or app has very specific requirements. For instance, iPhone development relies heavily on XCode. I personally employ eclipse for all but the most simple of web pages. It’s open source and can be customized with a multitude of plugins. For simple pages – and articles – I use Chami HTML-kit. HTML-Kit Tools is their commercial application, while HTML-Kit 292 is their free offering.

Other popular choices include Adobe Dreamweaver, Aptana Studio, Visual Studio Code, and WebStorm (Javascript).

With so many outstanding choices, it’s impossible for me to list all of them here, so rather than try to do that, I will identify some of the pertinent features to look for.

  • autocompletion: Autocompletion is triggered by you typing a few characters. A dropdown of relevant suggestions will then appear. Once you learn how to use autocompletion it is possible to type no more than three characters for everything but new variable names.
  • syntax highlighting: You’d be surprised how many elements make up a web page, from scripts, to tags, to attributes, etc. Syntax highlighting helps identify each of these.
  • server support: It’s helpful to be able to connect to a local or remote web server because certain operations, such as Ajax, require a server to work. Other connection types include FTP, SFTP, WebDAV servers, or to your online accounts (e.g. Dropbox).
  • database explorer/connectivity: Modern web apps often deal with data and the traditional RDBMS (Relational DataBase management System) is still the place to put it. Therefore you will want to have the capability to view and edit your data structures and data from within your IDE.
  • Tabbed Editor: There is no escaping the fact that you’ll have to open a number of files at any given time. Tabs make it easy to switch between them.
  • Extendable: A good IDE can be enhanced via plugins. That way, when a new technology comes out, you can simply install a plugin to begin using it immediately.
  • Debugging: Although browsers have amazing debugging facilities, it’s nice to be able to stay within your editor.
  • Testing: Web apps, like any other application type, require testing to work out all of the kinks. A good IDE will provide testing tools.

Syntax highlighting and autocompletion in eclipse

Conclusion

For blogs and other relatively static sites, there are many online platforms and tools that will assist you in building your site without any coding whatsoever. We’ll be getting to those, along with additional coding methodologies, in the next instalment.
