7 Important Digital Skills All Marketers Should Master In 2017 – Forbes

Marketing isn’t what it was 10 years ago (or even 5), with all the advancements of technology and data the past few years have brought. According to HubSpot, half of all new marketing hires will require technical skills. Here are some that will probably be on that list of job requirements.

1. Analytics

The very cornerstone of marketing as an industry is understanding the target audience in order to reach out to them effectively. In the modern world, that is best accomplished through collecting and analyzing data–often in large amounts.

Jess Vadino, senior strategist at Monetate, says, “No marketer needs to be a data scientist, but marketers should know the ins and outs of analytics platforms they use – and those their clients use. Someone who works with e-commerce clients, for instance, will be that much more valuable when they can point to the impact their work has had on the clients’ business KPIs, not just SEO ranking.”

2. SEO

Some people may claim that SEO is dead, but for marketers, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Organic search results have the potential to be much more powerful than paid ads, especially if they make it to the first page, and it’s been estimated that nearly 40% of customers find the company through search.

That said, algorithms and best practices are constantly evolving, so SEO is one skill that requires consistent updating and refining. Because of this, many companies prefer to have a dedicated SEO expert (or a team of them) rather than more general marketing professionals who know some SEO. Still, it’s well worth the time for any marketer to invest some time in grasping at least the basics.

3. HTML/CSS

Many marketing roles involve writing–whether it’s sales pages or blog posts. Being familiar with HTML at the very least will expedite the process of getting that content on the site and looking good.

Plus, Vadino adds that it makes cross-team communication much smoother: “While I’ve never had to write code as a marketer, understanding the basics makes conversations across teams so much easier.”

4. WordPress (or related CMS)

Tying in with the above, blogging and publishing content is key for marketing. Therefore, as a marketer in 2017, knowing how to get around a content management system (CMS) is crucial.

WordPress is one of the largest–to the point where it actually runs 27% of the entire Internet (nearly 16 million sites)–so starting there is your best bet. The good news is once you understand how to get around one CMS, it’s not tricky to get around another.

5. Video

Online video marketing (including the new darling, live video) is invoked by many marketing professionals as the future of the field.

“We saw this trend emerge in 2016 on almost every major social network, as brands looked to video as a way to communicate more easily with their readers,” says Divya Kunapuli, Director of Marketing at NGP VAN. “In 2017, marketers should not only know how video is used in marketing but master scripting, shooting, and editing videos for Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, etc. As someone who is self-taught in video production, I can attest to how simple it is to learn (especially given how you can do it all on your phone).”

Amber van Moessner, Director of Content at Livestream, weighs in on the power of streaming live. “Audiences spend more time with live video, and are willing to show up, participate, and join the conversation on social media more so than with VOD (video on demand) or blog content.”

The trick (and difficulty) to live video, though, is that it still has to be polished and compelling. “In 2016 we saw too many brands propping up folks who were not camera ready on Facebook Live to sometimes disastrous results,” says van Moessner. “Marketers and publishers need to be sure they’re ready to create high-quality live video for audiences in 2017, and that includes everything from equipment to on-screen talent. As this becomes the norm in content marketing, only the best live video will stand out.“

Video Marketing Secrets From Award-Winning Producer Amber …

In this video, Entrepreneur Network partner Kate Volman meets with Emmy Award-winning producer Amber Tollefson to discuss video marketing

Content is king and video is queen, says Tollefson. People want content daily, and video is one of the best ways to provide them with useful and engaging information. Although, sometimes it can be hard to make the time. But, rather than overwhelming yourself, simplify the process and use tools.

To start, you don’t need a fancy camera, lighting and a microphone — you can use your smartphone. Over time, you an begin upgrading something, but the first step is to simply get started. Tollefson recommends smartphone tools to help amplify your phone’s camera, and she also recommends using the website Animoto.com for an easy-to-use editing website.

In the end though, just have fun, be authentic, and go out there and share your story.

Un long calvaire

Drake’s marketing skills catch eye of researcher at London’s Western University

He’s a Grammy Award-winning rapper who coined the term YOLO (you only live once) and has more than 50 million social media followers.

And now, for the first time, the hip hop artist Drake is the subject of an academic paper.

Western University doctoral candidate Amara Pope, 22, researched how Drake successfully crafted a hybrid identity — through his music video and lyrics, that makes him appeal to a wide range of audiences — both locally and globally.

“I wanted to see how he drew his primary fan base and how he was able to build off of that . . . and rise to the top so quickly,” said Pope, who analyzed three of Drake’s early videos for her research.

Born to a black Catholic father from Memphis, Tenn., and a white Jewish mother from Toronto, Drake grew up in Toronto, a city that features prominently in his music and videos.

Pope said it’s no coincidence the 30-year-old rapper, whose full name is Aubrey Drake Graham, makes so many references to his Canada-U.S. connections, religious background and class struggles.

“Canada prides itself on its multicultural identity, so he becomes a poster boy for the Canadian identity,” she said.

Drake’s video for his hit Started From the Bottom depicts his rise from stocking shelves at Shoppers Drug Mart to becoming a globe-trotting celebrity. It opens with a shot of multicultural youngsters playing on a soccer pitch with a Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation logo.

Amara Pope, a Western University doctoral candidate in media studies, is researching musical artists as entrepreneurs and how they use self-branding to create their public images. (MORRIS LAMONT, The London Free Press)

“His ability to connect to so many different communities allowed him to have such a wide audience and allow people to really connect to his lyrics and his music and his music videos,” Pope said.

Born in Elmira, a small community north of Waterloo, Pope first started researching Drake while completing her master’s degree in communications at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Her paper on Drake was published in the academic journal Stream: Culture/Politics/Technology on Dec. 31.

Now in the first year of doctoral studies, Pope is expanding her research to explore how musicians use self-branding to create public images, taking a gender-specific lens to the practice.

Unlike many graduate students who dream of the ivory towers, Pope’s angling for a career in Toronto — widely known as “The Six,” thanks to Drake — working in branding in social media marketing.

So far, her work has attracted attention from media outlets across Ontario, but it hasn’t drawn any feedback from the rapper.

“I’m hoping that through all this publicity, he’s actually going to tell me what he thinks about my research,” said Pope, a Drake fan. “I’ve been tweeting at him, but I haven’t heard from him yet.”

5 Things You Need To Add To Your 2017 Digital Marketing Plan

It’s 2017.

It’s a new year, which means a new you. It’s a chance for you to get a fresh start on your digital marketing plan. Maybe you want to get into a new social media platform or release a new product. Or you might be entertaining the idea of hiring an SEO expert to help you boost your ranking. One thing is certain, you want to continue growing your business, and you know you’re on the right track, but something is missing.

Meet Guy Sheetrit, CEO at Over The Top SEO (photo credit: Eldad Rafaeli)

No matter what your plan is, you have to have your mind set on a goal. Guy Sheetrit, CEO of Over The Top SEO and a respected speaker at last year’s Ungagged U.K. conference, has some important tips for what business owners should be focusing on in the upcoming year. Keep reading to get a feel for what’s important and how to handle each of these new digital marketing areas. He shared a lot of wisdom in response to my subsequent questions.

Brian Rashid: As a leader of an SEO Experts team, what do you think will be the challenges this industry will face in 2017?

Guy Sheetrit: Well, many people have been speculating on what major search engines have in store for us this year. But we can confidently say that drastic changes are highly unlikely.

That said, those who have not been paying attention to elements like mobile friendliness or content quality, will suffer dire consequences this year in terms of rankings and sales.

SEO teams should now focus on having outstanding content creators that actually contribute with Google´s knowledge vault if they want to ever be featured on the coveted knowledge graph. Keywords are losing ground to what is now known as “rich answers.” Users don´t want just information anymore, they want direct responses to their questions, and Google favors sites that provide them.

Rashid: Google has put emphasis on switching from « http » to « https. » Can you explain how the switch could help business owners with an online presence?

Sheetrit: Switching to « https » used to be debatable. That was until Google came out and said that they’re going to start favoring websites that have an SSL certificate. This is mainly to keep users safe. But more importantly, it’s going to show Google that you’re just as concerned with user experience (UX) as they are.

Have you noticed that sometimes, while loading a website on your mobile phone, there is an option to make the page mobile friendly? This is because a great UX keeps people coming back to your website. However, the main reason for switching to « https » is to protect your customer’s’ information. If they’re ordering a product or service from your website, SSL certification tells your customers that their sensitive information is safe.

Rashid: How would a business switch from « http » to « https »?

Sheetrit: Google has an entire section dedicated to this. You can find information on it here and here. If you need help installing an SSL certificate, you can always contact your host provider. They can either do it for you or walk you through it.

One important thing to note is that switching from « http » to « https » is treated like a site URL change. This means that your rankings are going to bounce around a bit. This is nothing to worry about asthey are going to eventually stabilize.

Another thing that is of concern to many business owners is free SSL certificates versus paid ones. If your web host is offering free SSL certificates then you can use those. But if you decide to go somewhere else just to get a free SSL certificate, you need to do your research first. My advice? Just don’t do it. A few dollars a year for a paid SSL certificate will save you a lot of headaches in the long run.
