North Korea says Malaysia can’t be trusted to investigate the killing of leader’s half brother

North Korea said Monday that Malaysia cannot be trusted to carry out the investigation into last week’s killing of leader Kim Jong Un’s half brother, as tensions over the death become increasingly heated.

With South Korea saying it was “certain” that Pyongyang was behind the “act of terrorism” and Malaysia insisting it will continue following establish procedures, the already sensational case is becoming more dramatic by the day.

Adding to the intrigue, CCTV footage released Monday showed the attack on Kim Jong Nam at Kuala Lumpur airport. The 45-year-old North Korean is seen going to the check-in kiosk, when two women ambush him and appear to apply some kind of poison to him. He died shortly afterward.

North Korea has become angrier by the day over case, accusing Malaysia of colluding with South Korea to try to make it look bad, and of “human rights abuses” over the way it had conducted the autopsy and its treatment of a North Korean suspect and his family.

“We cannot trust the investigation by the Malaysian police,” Kang Chol, Pyongyang’s envoy, told reporters outside the North Korean embassy in Kuala Lumpur Monday afternoon, noting that there had been no evidence of the cause of death even a week after the attack.

“It only increases the doubt that there could be someone else’s hand behind the investigation,” he said, echoing a previous allegation that South Korea was trying to malign North Korea, and accusing Malaysia of defaming Pyongyang’s reputation.

He proposed that North Korea and Malaysia should open a joint investigation into Kim Jong Nam’s death.

Kang’s statement came after he was summoned to the Malaysian foreign ministry over his criticism of Kuala Lumpur’s investigation. Meanwhile, Malaysia recalled its ambassador to Pyongyang for “consultations.”

« The Malaysian government regards as unfounded the criticisms made by the North Korean ambassador,” Malaysia’s ministry of foreign affairs said in a statement earlier Monday. « The Malaysian government takes a serious view of all the accusations made aimed at tarnishing the country’s reputation. »

North Korea had strongly objected to Malaysia’s decision to conduct a post mortem on Kim Jong Nam, and then when on a public tirade when it emerged it was inconclusive and that a second post mortem would be needed.

“Their attempt to mangle again his body not to release [it] is the culmination of human rights abuse and shows once again how they are desperate to shift blame on us,” Kang said in a statement that he read out to reporters.

The results of the second autopsy could be out Wednesday, Malaysia’s health ministry said.

With one North Korean in custody in Malaysia and at least four of his compatriots suspected of involvement, South Korea voiced increasing certainty that the North Korean regime was behind the assassination.

“It seems clear that the North Korean regime is behind this case,” Hwang Kyo-ahn, the South Korean prime minister who is now acting as president, told a meeting of the National Security Council Monday.

The apparent assassination of Kim Jong Nam was an “unacceptable inhumane criminal act” and that Pyongyang should be punished for committing this “act of terrorism,” he said.

His pronouncement came after Malaysia released information on four North Koreans who had been in Kuala Lumpur for several weeks but left on the same day of the attack.

The man who has been arrested is 47-year-old Ri Jong Chol, who is said to have a background in chemistry and to have studied in India. A Facebook page belonging to a Ri Jong Chol who studied at Kim Il Sung University and lists his home as Pyongyang features a profile photo of a man wearing gloves in a science lab.

The other four named by Malaysia as suspects are now back in North Korea, having gone to great lengths to avoid going through China — the most direct route — to get home. They appear to have flown from Kuala Lumpur to Jakarta then to Dubai and onto Vladivostok, before traveling from there to Pyongyang.

It is not known why they went to such trouble, although China had been protecting Kim Jong Nam, who had lived in quasi-exile in Beijing and the Chinese territory of Macau for the past 15-odd years.

South Korea had reached this degree of certainty based on Malaysian’s suspicions., Hwang said.

When pressed to explain how South Korea could be so certain — a position expressed within 24 hours of the attack becoming known — the unification minister, Hong Yong-pyo, said that this conclusion was based on “North Korea’s behavior.”

“We can see from North Korea’s past activities that this is points to North Korea,” Hong said at a press conference with foreign reporters in Seoul, saying that one characteristic of the Kim Jong Un regime was that it operated as “a reign of terror.”

Swedes have been scratching their heads since President Donald Trump suggested that some kind of major incident had taken place in their country Friday night. Trump is now clarifying his comments, saying he was referring to something he saw on television.

Trump first referenced Sweden during a Florida rally on Saturday as he talked about past terror attacks in Europe. He told supporters, “Look what’s happening last night in Sweden.”

In Sweden, the remark raised eyebrows and sparked derision about a fact-challenged president. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Catarina Axelsson said that the government wasn’t aware of any “terror-linked major incidents.”

On Sunday, Trump tweeted that his statement was in reference to a story broadcast on Fox News concerning immigrants and Sweden.

The president may be referring to a segment aired Friday night on the Fox News show “Tucker Carlson Tonight” that reported Sweden had accepted more than 160,000 asylum-seekers last year but that only 500 had found jobs. The report went on to say that a surge in gun violence and rape had followed the influx of immigrants.

A White House spokeswoman, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, says that Trump was talking about rising crime and recent incidents in general, not referring to a specific issue.

5:20 p.m.

President Donald Trump’s meetings with potential candidates to be his new national security adviser are continuing Sunday afternoon.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders says Trump is meeting with four candidates at his private Palm Beach club.

On the schedule were his acting adviser, retired Army Lt. Gen. Keith Kellogg; John Bolton, a former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations; Army Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster and the superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen.

Sanders said Trump may interview more candidates and hopes to make the decision soon.

Trump also discussed strategies for repealing and replacing President Barack Obama’s health care law with top advisers, including Health Secretary Tom Price and Mick Mulvaney, director of the White House budget office.

The Homeland Security Department has drafted sweeping new guidelines aimed at aggressively detaining and deporting immigrants living in the U.S. illegally.

A pair of memoranda signed by DHS Secretary John Kelly outline the plans under consideration. The memos dated Friday seek to implement President Donald Trump’s broad directive to crack down on illegal immigration.

Kelly outlines plans to hire thousands of additional enforcement agents, expand on the priority list for immigrants marked for immediate removal and enlist local law enforcement to help make arrests. Those details were confirmed to The Associated Press by a person briefed on the documents.

A White House official says the White House has raised objections with the documents and is working with DHS to finalize the policy.

1:15 p.m.

The Congressional Black Caucus says it will meet with President Donald Trump after all.

Rep. Elijah Cummings is a senior member of the group. He told CBS’ ”Face the Nation” that Trump answered the caucus’ Jan. 19 request for a meeting “a day or so ago.” The Maryland Democrat says he expects the two parties will meet when Congress returns from a weeklong break and discuss prescription drugs and urban issues.

The possible meeting stirred controversy during Trump’s press conference last week. Responding to a reporter’s inquiry, Trump suggested that Cummings had declined a meeting and asked the reporter, who is black, to set up a meeting.

Cummings says he never rejected a meeting. On Sunday, he attributed the late acceptance to Trump apparently not being “in contact with his staff properly.”

___

11:30 a.m.

President Donald Trump plans to speak Sunday with leaders from Panama and Trinidad and Tobago.

A White House official says Trump will speak to leaders of both countries. The official requested anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the president’s schedule.

Trump has been speaking to foreign leaders since he took office four weeks ago.

The calls come on a busy day for Trump. He is also interviewing candidates to be his new national security adviser and is planning a health care policy meeting.

___

10:55 a.m.

Defense Secretary Jim Mattis says he has no issues with the media, despite his boss’ condemnation that the “fake news media” is “the enemy of the American people.”

The Pentagon chief says he’s had some contentious times with members of the media, but adds the press is a constituency he deals with.

He also rebuffed suggestions that disarray at the White House is affecting the military. His comments came days after the White House national security adviser was forced to resign.

Mattis says at a news conference in the United Arab Emirates that at times democracy is “quite sporting.” But he says the military’s job is to hold the line while the government sorts out the way ahead.

Says Mattis: “We don’t have any disarray inside the military, and that’s where my responsibility lies.”

A top adviser to President Donald Trump says campaign aides didn’t have any contact with Russia before the election.

Chief of staff Reince Priebus (ryns PREE’-bus) tells NBC’s “Meet the Press” that “we don’t know of any contacts with Russian agents.”

Priebus says he had “talked to the top levels of the intelligence community.” He denies a New York Times report that multiple Trump advisers were in touch with Russian intelligence advisers during the election campaign.

During a news conference last week, Trump gave a lawyerly denial that his campaign aides had been in touch with Russian officials before last fall’s election. He said: “nobody that I know of.”

___

10:45 a.m.

The top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee says President Donald Trump is behaving like a “tin-pot dictator” by making comments criticizing the news media as “the enemy of the American people.”

Rep. Adam Schiff of California described Trump’s tweet last week as “the most devastating” and “the most alarming” in attacking the First Amendment right to a free press.

He told ABC’s “This Week” that the comment is what tin-pot dictators say “when they want to control all the information.” He says people from both parties should reject the description.

Schiff says he agrees with Republican Sen. John McCain, who said a free press is vital “to preserve democracy as we know it.” Schiff says the country is confronting a “new war of ideas” — authoritarianism vs. democracy.

4 Predictions for Video Marketing in 2017 | MarTech Advisor

Brad Jefferson, CEO at Animoto highlights how the omnipresence of video content in 2017 will impact everything from marketing strategy to the job market

When I shared my predictions on the video space with MarTech Advisor around this time last year, online video consumption was on a steady rise. Today, video consumption is at an all-time high — in fact, in 2017, video content will represent 74 percent of all internet traffic. And as a result, more marketers than ever will be using the medium to connect with consumers.

Here are four trends we can expect to see this year:

1.Businesses embrace more than just video; they embrace video marketing strategy

In November 2014, Mark Zuckerberg predicted that the majority of Facebook traffic would be video in five years. The rate of growth of video on Facebook has consistently increased. In 2014, Facebook saw two billion daily video views on their platform. A recent report from Facebook shows that, in just a year, the social media platform is now driving over 8 billion video views per day. Numbers like this show that it will be vital for large and small brands alike to make video a part of their marketing strategy if they want to remain competitive.

2. In 2016, SMB’s followed big business marketers. Now, big businesses turn to smaller businesses for social video inspiration

Last year, we predicted that SMB’s would be adopting the marketing trends of big brands, and they did, with more small businesses than ever embracing video. But now we’re seeing this theme reverse itself. This year, big brands and marketers will be following the trends of SMB’s, whose approach to social media relies heavily on DIY video creation. Professional marketers at large companies will become “DIY Marketers,” trading highly produced videos for scrappy but timely and engaging ones — even if they don’t have any video experience.

3. Video marketing will become a must-have job skill

For recent college graduates and job seekers, video marketing competency is a highly marketable skill that will grow in demand throughout 2017. College graduates have a native understanding of using video on social, which is an asset for companies who want to tell their story using video. In a survey Animoto conducted this year, surveying more than 1,000 professional marketers and 1,000 small- and medium-sized business owners, respondents said they view video marketing skills as a more desirable skill for their team in the next 12 months compared to email, design, and written marketing materials. (Animoto’s 2016 Social Video Forecast) Hubspot’s CEO, Brian Halligan, agrees– his advice? “Stop looking for that blogger and start looking for that videographer. 50% of your content mixture should be text and video. You need to make the shift to what your consumers are on.”

4. Business video uploads to Facebook will triple

In Facebook’s Q3 2017 earnings call, the company reported that 3 million businesses uploaded at least one video to their Facebook Business page per month. This number has doubled in the last six months, and I predict that pace will continue to gain steam. As video becomes an essential marketing tool, and software is available that makes it easy for any size business to create compelling video, I see there being 10 million businesses uploading video to their business page each month by end of 2017.

Whether you are a marketing video expert, or just beginning to experiment with the possibilities, 2017 will offer a great opportunity to expand your video marketing efforts and take advantage of all the medium has to offer to connect with your customers.

To paraphrase an age-old saying: If at first you don’t succeed, well, dust off the historic launch pad and try another liftoff.

Not as catchy as the original, perhaps, but certainly fitting for SpaceX, which succeeded Sunday on its second launch attempt at NASA’s Launch Complex 39A, at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The first attempt, scrubbed Saturday with just 13 seconds before liftoff, was foiled by concerns over an anomaly discovered in the rocket’s steering system.

The issue was « 99% likely to be fine, » Elon Musk, founder of the private space company, tweeted Saturday, « but that 1% chance isn’t worth rolling the dice. Better to wait a day. »

On Sunday, however, the launch went smoothly. Not only did SpaceX’s Falcon 9 rocket lift off without a hitch, its first stage also returned to land right back on a platform on Earth. Shortly afterward, the Dragon spacecraft it was carrying detached as planned from the rocket.

While there’s nothing particularly rare about the 5,500 pounds of cargo strapped into that spacecraft — which is destined for the International Space Station — the pad it took off from has quite a backstory: Launch Complex 39A was the site that sent the first humans to the moon in the 1969 Apollo 11 mission.

It was the pad for a number of NASA’s most important missions — from its early days sending people to space, to the three decades of the space shuttle program.

A Liftoff Deferred: SpaceX Mission From NASA's Historic Launch Pad Delayed

Now the pad, which hadn’t been used since that program ended in 2011, is getting dusted off for a new era « as a spaceport open for use by public — and commercial — missions to space, » NPR’s Rae Ellen Bichell reported for our Newscast unit.

As we noted Saturday, NASA says SpaceX’s resupply mission packs supplies and materials for more than a few experiments:

« Science investigations launching on Dragon include commercial and academic research investigations that will enable researchers to advance their knowledge of the medical, psychological and biomedical challenges astronauts face during long-duration spaceflight.

« One experiment will use the microgravity environment to grow stem cells that are of sufficient quality and quantity to use in the treatment of patients who have suffered a stroke. A Merck Research Labs investigation will test growth in microgravity of antibodies important for fighting a wide range of human diseases, including cancer. »

Reuters reports that NASA is also carefully monitoring the launch by SpaceX, which it « hired to fly cargo to the station after the shuttle program ended. » The news service says NASA wants « to learn more about SpaceX’s operations before it clears the company to fly NASA astronauts on SpaceX rockets. »

McCain criticizes Trump for calling media ‘the enemy’: ‘That’s how dictators get started’

Sen. John McCain spoke out Saturday in defense of the free press after President Donald Trump lashed out against the news media several times over the past week, at one point declaring it « the enemy of the American People! »

Such talk, McCain, R-Ariz., said on NBC News in an interview set to air Sunday, was « how dictators get started. »

Trump calls the news media 'the enemy of the American People'

« In other words, a consolidation of power, » McCain told « Meet the Press » host Chuck Todd from Munich. « When you look at history, the first thing that dictators do is shut down the press. And I’m not saying that President Trump is trying to be a dictator. I’m just saying we need to learn the lessons of history. »

The 80-year-old Republican senator was responding to several tweets by Trump over the past week, in which he repeatedly attacked the media as « fake news. » In one widely shared tweet Friday, Trump said the press was « not my enemy » but that of the American people.

YouTube woos Tollywood for film marketing

HYDERABAD: Riding high on the success of Baahubali that used YouTube effectively to engage with its audience much before the release of the movie, the US-based video-sharing website is now trying to woo Tollywood producers to hop on to its platform for promotional activities.

« We have seen that in Bollywood, movies are coming up with videos on YouTube three to 12 months before the release date. They start putting out bulk trailers, dialogues, music and behind the scenes moments, among others. There is a direct correlation that they are seeing between the engagement in that phase to ultimate box office results So YouTube, in a lot of ways, is getting established as an ‘online to offline’ model for the movie industry, » Satya Raghavan, head of entertainment partnership, YouTube, told TOI.

Raghavan was in city to meet the Telugu Film Producers Council members to chalk out a strategy on how more Telugu film producers can engage with their target audiences digitally.

The YouTube official pointed out that apart from Bollywood, it is seeing a lot of traction from Marathi as well as Kannada film industry. Tollywood offers a lucrative opportunity for YouTube in terms of the sheer number of movies being released, which is around 250 per annum, he said.

Citing an example, Arka Media Works (Producer of Baahubali), co-founder and CEO Shobu Yarlagadda pointed out that Baahubali-2 is one of the first movies in India to use ‘YouTube 360’ platform. This used virtual reality technology to showcase the sets of Baahubali 2 to the audience.

According to Yarlagadda, they were able to create a lot of buzz about Baahubali-1 in the north as well as foreign markets due to the videos released on YouTube. He pointed out that producers are seeing a trend, wherein the distributors track how a movie trailer is being received by the audience and accordingly allot a certain number of screens to a movie.

Telugu Film Producers Council secretary Kodali Venkateswara Rao said the idea behind engaging with a platform like YouTube is to ensure that the marketing costs of Telugu film producers are kept low.

10 Social Media Mistakes That Are Killing Your Business

Credit: Pixabay

As important as it is to be on top of the latest new social media trends, it’s also equally important to be constantly cleansing your social media strategy from consistent mistakes. When you’re so “in the trenches” in your plan, it’s hard to notice the simple, but harmful mistakes your business might be making. So as we get deeper in 2017, here are 10 things you’ll want to stop doing before it’s too late.

  1. Cross Platform Auto Posts

A few years back when post scheduling and cross-platform post triggers first came out, they were all the buzz. These simple software platforms allow you to publish a piece of content on one social media platform and then auto-posts it to all the other social media networks for you. While this tool saves you time in the short run, it’s not an effective way to use social media.

People consume content differently across all social media platforms. What works on Twitter, won’t always work on Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin and so on. Republishing a post automatically on other accounts is lazy and shows you don’t understand that platform’s unique capabilities. Take the extra time and optimize your content for each individual platform.

  1. Stealing Content (Without Crediting)

If you are downloading memes or videos, or if you are straight up stealing posts for your social media outlets, it’s time to stop. Not only can this be very embarrassing if you are caught, but not asking for permission or not giving proper credit can lead you into a dangerous legal situation. There are stories everywhere of companies sued for copyright infringement of stock photos, or video theft. It’s better to not post at all than to post stolen content.

  1. Sharing Video Links On Facebook

It’s 2017 and Facebook video uploads have long since overtaken YouTube. While YouTube still has its benefits, overlooking the power of Facebook video content is a big mistake. Facebook users interact with videos uploaded to the platform at a much higher rate than with photo posts or even video link shares. So skip the link and upload directly to Facebook for maximum engagement.

  1. Over-hashtagging

Hashtagging too much looks spammy and desperate. If you are going to hashtag a post, use it tastefully and only on platforms that actually support the use of searching by hashtag. For example, on LinkedIn, you should be weary of using hashtags as they only appear as searchable on mobile. Also, be critical of the amount of potential traffic when using a hashtag. If it’s a trending topic on Twitter, then it may make sense to throw your two cents in by using the hashtag. However, if you’re tweeting #SaaS in an attempt to market your SaaS product, don’t expect a flood of traffic.

  1. Filming Vertically

This one is simple and yet so important. If you’re filming a marketing video for social media on your phone, make sure you hold the device horizontally. We’ve all seen the poorly made, shaky phone video with the black bars on the top and bottom of the video filling up half the screen. Don’t be that person.

Before you start your recording, make sure your phone is horizontal and in landscape photo/video mode. This is video-making 101. And while there are many hot new video marketing trends, rest assured the vertically filmed trade show testimonial is not one of them! Cut this out!

  1. Not Sharing Blog Content On Social

Social traffic, or website traffic that comes from your social media accounts, is a major part of Google’s search ranking algorithm. So seize every available opportunity to drive your Twitter followers and Facebook fans back to your website.

If you’re not sharing every article published on your website on your social media accounts, you are making a big mistake. Not only are you poorly distributing your blogs but also you aren’t truly doing proper search engine optimization. Share your blog content on social, and give viewers a reason to go to your site.

  1. No Social Media Sharing Buttons

Similarly, if your website doesn’t have buttons to quickly share pages back to social media, you also are missing out big time. Simply having a share button on your blog or webpage can increase your social traffic, and grow your digital clout. Add one for free today, or ping your web designer if you don’t have one!

  1. #CateringToYoungPeople.

Every brand under the sun is trying to “figure out” out how to effectively market to the “younger generation.” While youth marketing is a gray area for many, one common pitfall is going ‘out of brand’ in an attempt to cater to young people. This happens especially on Twitter.

A brand sees a hashtag or trending topic and thinks, “Wow, if I use this cool lingo, all those young kids will flock to buy my product.” A few “bae’s” and mannequin challenges later, you are officially a catering company. Not only will going out of brand irritate your main audience, but also most young people will see through it. Stay true to you and find more creative ways to market to youth audiences.

  1. Excessive Commenting And Liking Posts On LinkedIn

We all have that LinkedIn connection that doesn’t know that everything they “like” and “comment” on is publically broadcasted to their entire professional network. Or maybe they do, but they don’t care if their community sees them liking the bikini picture, arguing politics, solving math problems, and choosing their favorite logo four times a day.

The reality is that while LinkedIn is a valuable tool, it is also the easiest social network to annoy connections. People hate when others misuse Linkedin, and they hate being annoyed on the platform. So be careful what you “like,” and if you can’t be — hide your activity updates.

  1. Blindly Spending Ad Dollars

The last and most costly social media mistake is blindly spending ad dollars in an attempt to growth hack the system. Just because Facebook marketing is cheap doesn’t mean you should randomly shoot off boosted posts just to increase engagement.

Yes, engagement is great but spending social media ad dollars in the absence of a real strategy is just stupid and can seriously hurt your business. Lay the groundwork before putting dollars into social. Understand your goals, your audience, your content, have a specific purpose, and track the results of each ad you run. Don’t be careless!

So there you are. Don’t let all your hard work go to waste. Eliminate these simple mistakes and your audience will thank you!

Digital marketers mull video plans after inflated Facebook numbers were re-rated

by

Yolanda Redrup

Digital marketers have played down the importance of video in campaigns, and claimed a dramatic re-rating of Facebook’s viewer numbers would not require a significant strategy re-evaluation.

New figures from Nielsen, revealed by Mumbrella earlier this month, indicated that Facebook streaming numbers were down 94 per cent after the data analytics business reassessed how it measures Facebook’s video views.

This followed an admission by the social media giant that it had overestimated its numbers alarmingly by counting people watching as little as three seconds of an auto-play video.

When Nielsen adjusted its calculations, Facebook’s streaming figures fell from 9.94 billion in September to 560 million in October, YouTube meanwhile recorded 2.81 billion views in September.
