Winnipeg restaurant owner hopes online video nabs thief caught stealing tips

The owner of Sorrento’s restaurant on McPhillips Street hopes a surveillance video posted to Facebook will lead to a suspect’s arrest.

Fabio Di Lello said a man walked into his restaurant around 8:30 p.m. on October 24.

Di Lello said the man told a waitress he was meeting a friend.

« He kind of hung around for about two minutes and when the waitress walked away, he scoped out the place and made sure no one was looking, » he said.

That’s when, the owner said, the suspect reached over the counter and stole money from a waitress.

Di Lello said the waitress didn’t notice until later in the night.

He began to scroll through surveillance video and was shocked when he saw what happened.

“It seems to me like he knew where it was, he had been here before because he knew where to look and he kind of knew what he was doing,” said Di Lello.

Di Lello said only about $20 was missing from the restaurant.

He filed a police report, and submitted the surveillance video to police.

« To me, it’s not the amount of money he took, it wasn’t very much. But it’s more the principle of him coming here and just thinking that he can have his way with their money,” said Di Lello.

Police confirmed the incident.

They said they are reviewing surveillance video.

So far no arrests have been made.
