Tokyo residents get their annual fix of KFC for Christmas

Thanks to a successful marketing campaign, it is custom for people in Tokyo to celebrate Christmas by eating KFC.

Dozens of Tokyo residents queued outside Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) branches in anticipation of the chain’s annual Christmas menu.

Christmas is not a national holiday in Japan, but due to a successful marketing campaign, many Tokyo locals have been eating at KFC’s various outlets every Christmas for the last 40 years.

Many even pre-order their dinners up to two months in advance.

Queues form at KFC outlets across Tokyo for Christmas meals.

The tradition started in 1974 when an expat settled on KFC after he was unable to find Turkey for his Christmas dinner.
