Trump Scrambles For A Win — Any Win, Really — As He Nears 100 Days

“The White House gambit to hold hostage health care for millions of Americans, in order to force American taxpayers to foot the bill for a wall that the President said would be paid for by Mexico is a complete non-starter,” said Schumer’s spokesman, Matt House. “The U.S. government is supposed to take care of its citizens and, according to the President, Mexico is supposed to pay for the wall. If the administration would drop their 11th hour demand for a wall that Democrats, and a good number of Republicans oppose, Congressional leaders could quickly reach a deal.”

The Latest: Rescued teen back home in Tennessee

COLUMBIA, Tenn. — The Latest on the missing Tennessee high school student who was found in California with a teacher (all times local):

4:10 p.m.

A California sheriff says a Tennessee teacher accused of kidnapping his 15-year-old student got the idea to go to a commune after visiting Berkeley, a city long known as a counterculture hotbed.

Siskiyou County Sheriff Jon E. Lopey said teacher Tad Cummins took the girl to the commune at Black Bear Ranch in northern California but “didn’t get along” with the residents and wound up leaving.

Police say the teacher kidnapped the girl from Columbia, Tennessee, on March 13. He was arrested Thursday after a tip led police to them at a remote cabin in Cecilville, California.

The sheriff of a northern California county says a 15-year-old Tennessee girl who was allegedly kidnapped by her teacher was “laughing, crying and acting stoic” after deputies found her at the remote cabin.

Siskiyou County Sheriff Jon E. Lopey tells the Associated Press that she did not exhibit any anger toward her teacher.

Police say teacher Tad Cummins kidnapped the girl from Columbia, Tennessee, on March 13. Cummins was arrested Thursday after a tip led police to the cabin in Cecilville, California.

The sheriff said the girl showed no signs of elation when she and Cummins were found. He said she did not act like a rescued person.

He said the two were staying in the cabin and doing work for a land caretaker in exchange for food and fuel.

The father of a 15-year-old Tennessee girl who was found in northern California with a teacher after being missing for more than a month says he thinks his daughter was brainwashed.

Speaking Friday on ABC’s “Good Morning America,” the father said his daughter will need therapy and that her family will be patient with her and get her the help she needs.

The Associated Press is not naming the girl or her family members because she is an alleged victim of a sex crime.

In the meantime, a teacher at the girl’s high school, 50-year-old Tad Cummins, faces state charges of aggravated kidnapping and sexual contact with a minor as well as a federal charge of taking a minor across state lines to have sex.

Cummins surrendered to deputies Thursday near a remote cabin in Cecilville, California.

After being missing for more than a month, a 15-year-old Tennessee girl was found near a cabin in a remote part of northern California and the 50-year-old teacher accused of kidnapping her was arrested.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation says health sciences teacher Tad Cummins surrendered to sheriff’s deputies Thursday without incident in Cecilville, California. The girl was apparently healthy and unharmed, but authorities say their main concern was her emotional and mental state.

Cummins faces state charges of aggravated kidnapping and sexual contact with a minor as well as a federal charge of taking a minor across state lines to have sex. Acting U.S. Attorney Jack Smith says that if convicted of the federal charge, he faces at least 10 years in prison.

Why are brands turning to live video streaming?

New Delhi: When smartphone maker Motorola Mobility India launched its fifth-generation Moto G5 in India on 4 April, the event was live streamed on YouTube and Facebook, where it received 37,000 and 210,000 views, respectively.

Motorola’s parent Lenovo Mobile Business Group (MBG) says most of its product launches are webcast live on social media.

“A live event video is the first actual asset that officially goes out as launch communication,” said Rachna Lather, marketing head of Lenovo MBG and Motorola Mobility India, adding, “We believe that through live video streaming, our consumers get information about the product, its specifications and the offers to be availed of in real time. We make sure that the brand presence should be felt at relevant platforms by seeding the live video for the in-market audience.”

Motorola isn’t the only one. The Indian units of automobile giants like Hyundai Motor Co. and Jaguar Land Rover Automotive Plc., US home-sharing giant Airbnb Inc., beauty brand Avon Products Inc., and home-grown fashion e-tailer Myntra have adopted the same strategy.

Essentially, a live video allows a brand or an individual to stream video content using either a smartphone or desktop in real time. The feature was first launched by Facebook, followed by micro-blogging platform Twitter and then YouTube. Companies quickly latched on to it to launch new brands and engage with consumers.

Experts say live videos are growing in popularity because they are immersive and engaging, giving consumers a front-row experience. They can ask questions of a brand, give feedback and become a part of the community. Unlike a mass media channel like television, the communication is not one-sided.

“While the traditional launch mediums usually result in a unidirectional flow of information, the live video format helped us build positive digital chatter among our target audience by encouraging interesting conversations around our new range of products,” said a spokesperson for Avon India.

The beauty products maker recently unveiled its new range of colour cosmetics called ‘Avon True’ through Facebook Live which was viewed by more than 100,000 viewers.

Apart from product launches and live webcasting of on-ground campaigns, another big use case of live video for brands is getting celebrity endorsers to interact with consumers. Avon India, for instance, received more than 2,000 interactions within a span of one hour during the Avon True launch in which consumers asked questions and sought tips from the brand ambassador, Bollywood actor Aditi Rao Hydari.

Saurabh Doshi, head of media partnerships at Facebook India, says the chance to talk to someone influential tends to attract viewers. “It is an authentic communication in real time and that is why we have seen live videos getting far better traction than pre-recorded videos which feature celebrities,” he adds.

Along with brand promotions, live videos are also becoming a staple tool for movie studios to launch trailers as well as execute marketing promotions. Viacom18 Motion Pictures, which distributed and marketed American action movie xXx: Return of Xander Cage, featuring Hollywood actor Vin Diesel and Bollywood’s Deepika Padukone, live webcast the premiere of the film on Facebook and YouTube. Viewers got a chance to interact with the stars.

“Live, as a concept, is still growing and evolving. However, once the viewer tunes in, live videos beat every other platform in terms of engagement and interactions. Currently, being leveraged in a non-curated fashion, it has to evolve in a way where content creators can plan the kind of content that viewers want to consume including a multi-camera set-up which ensures superior live experience,” said Rudrarup Datta, senior vice-president, marketing, Viacom18 Motion Pictures.

Filmfare Awards also live broadcast all the action from the red carpet where celebrities interacted with users on Twitter through live streaming. Twitter also live broadcast a special show with film director Karan Johar and Filmfare’s editor Jitesh Pillai hosted by digital creator Abhish Mathew an hour before the awards show was broadcast on television.

“There is a novelty factor in seeing something happening in the world in real time. Live video also helps build virality. It the content is good, people will start retweeting it, which will lead to more people joining in,” said Taranjeet Singh, business head, Twitter India.

Live video is also a cost-effective tool through which brands can easily map the engagement primarily through views, likes, shares and comments.

Although the cost of a live video is one-tenth that of a digital video campaign, it attracts ten times more views and eight times more comments than a pre-recorded video, said Manu Bhadane, associate vice-president, video strategy, WATConsult, the social media agency of Dentsu Aegis Network.

“I believe that marketers will invest 5-10% of their digital video spends on live videos,” said Bhadane.

According to a report jointly published by Dentsu Aegis Network and exchange4media, video advertising spending is estimated at Rs1,249 crore a year and poised to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 40% until 2020.

Rob Lowe Plays The Colonel For KFC Sandwich Launch

KFC is taking on rival QSRs with its spicy chicken sandwich, the Zinger — and actor Rob Lowe, playing the Colonel, is helping the famed chicken chain promote an epic marketing
stunt for the launch.

Following teasers on KFC’s social media channels, the campaign, from Wieden + Kennedy, is kicking off with a 90-second video (below). Lowe —
sporting a white, doubled-breasted “spacesuit” — is shown announcing, in a televised press conference to the nation, that KFC is not only launching the sandwich in America; it will
launch the sandwich into space.

KFC says that the chicken sandwich space launch is no yolk, and that it will release specifics later this spring.

“I
have no idea how we’ll launch a chicken sandwich into space, but the marketing team thinks they can do it,” Kevin Hochman, KFC U.S. president and chief concept officer, claimed in the
brand’s tongue-in-cheek release.

The Zinger has been a KFC favorite in other markets for decades and is currently sold in 120 countries, according to the company.

In the U.S., Hochman has said that KFC hopes that the Zinger can challenge other QSRs’ chicken sandwiches, which include McDonald’s’ popular Hot ‘n Spicy
McChicken and Burger King’s new Crispy Chicken Sandwich. KFC’s entry will be hand-breaded and fried in-store, as opposed to the refrying frozen, breaded chicken pieces on site, as the
other big chains do.

Fried chicken sandwiches account for 40% of all fried chicken served at U.S. QSRs, versus chicken-on-the-bone’s 18%, Hochman told Business
Insider

Further, if the Zinger is a hit, it could springboard KFC into being a major player in sandwiches. That’s a mouth-watering prospect for KFC, given
sandwiches’ convenience advantage in a world of mobile, snack-on-the-run consumers.

In fact, the company invested $80 million in operational and service improvements to
prepare for the Zinger, which will, at least initially, be available for 14 weeks.

The Zinger will be sold on its own for $3.99, or as part of a “$5 Fill Up” meal that
includes wedges, a medium drink and a chocolate chip cookie.

Lowe, who says he met Colonel Sanders as a child because his grandfather was the head of the Ohio chapter of the
National Restaurant Association, is the latest in a series of actors to play the Colonel since 2015, including Norm Macdonald, Jim Gaffigan, George Hamilton, Vincent Kartheiser and Billy Zane.

Appropriate Account Types For YouTube Video Marketing – JOSIC

One effective way to increase your popularity and eventual profitability is to do video marketing the YouTube way. And how will you be able to do that? First you need to organize the kinds of videos you intend to popularize or advertise. You can have different sets of videos in your channel, but you really need to have a clear sense of direction so you do not end up messing your play list.

After you have successfully thought out a theme or mode for your YouTube channel, you can set up your account. Having your own YouTube account will enable you to upload videos limitlessly and organize your user interface and play list. The main reason that you need to identify the kinds of videos you intend to upload is because you also need to select your account type.

There are several account types: Guru, Musician, Comedian, Reporter, Director, You Tuber, Politician and Partner. These account types enable the user to customize the logo and post additional information relating to the user type’s activities.

For heads up, the Guru type pertains to users who like to post DIY and How-To videos. The genre could range from carpentry, cooking, automotive, grooming to just about anything you can think of giving tips about. Musician is obviously set for performers who like to post videos of their gigs. Aspiring musicians make the most of YouTube by posting their most pleasant numbers hoping to catch the attention of talent scouts and get signed.

Comedian is set for stand-up comics and also aspiring comedic actors. Some post videos of their skits, while others attempt to relive the silent film era by making their own versions. Reporters are those who post videos of news worthy events and produce documentaries while trying to make their statements be heard and viewed. Directors also make their own documentaries and short films and post it on YouTube. The lucky ones can also post play dates of their films or plays if they were ever signed up for the bigger picture.

Account types Politician and Partners are not open to the public but you can apply for these categories and see if you are qualified. Politician is well of course reserved for personalities in the public office and their videos consist mostly of their political statements and messages to the public. YouTube Partners must pass all the criteria to be able to be considered as one.

To summarize, a You Tuber must own or have authority to upload and to profit from the original videos. The user must also upload videos on a regular basis, preferably not taking too long to release a followup. Lastly, the user’s channel must have pre-existing thousands of viewers to be considered as a profitable YouTube channel.

As a YouTube partner, you will be enticed to a revenue sharing by allowing advertisements to appear on your original video and channel. Though there are no guarantees on the amount of money you can earn as a Partner, it still a good way to profit through video marketing while having fun.

Sessions takes step toward enforcing threat to strip funding from ‘sanctuary cities’

Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Friday demanded that nine jurisdictions produce proof that they are communicating with federal authorities about undocumented immigrants or risk losing grant funding.

Sessions sent letters to the nine jurisdictions, including Philadelphia, New York and Chicago, in the latest sign that the Trump administration intends to punish what are sometimes called sanctuary cities that do not cooperate in its promised crackdown on illegal immigration.

President Trump signed an executive order in January declaring that sanctuary jurisdictions would not be eligible to receive federal grants, and Sessions vowed last month during a White House news conference to take Justice Department money from such places.

How far Trump can go, though, and what jurisdictions can do to avoid his ire, remains unclear.

How sanctuary cities work, and how Trump’s executive order might affect them View Graphic How sanctuary cities work, and how Trump’s executive order might affect them

In a news release, the Justice Department said that the places were identified in a Justice Department Inspector General’s Office report from May 2016 as potentially having policies that hindered communication with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The letters were addressed to officials in New Orleans; Philadelphia; Chicago; New York City; Clark County, Nev.; Miami-Dade County, Fla.; Milwaukee County, Wis.; Cook County, Ill.; and the state of California.

“Additionally, many of these jurisdictions are also crumbling under the weight of illegal immigration and violent crime,” the Justice Department wrote in a news release, casting aspersions on New York, Chicago and the Bay Area in particular.

The release said New York, for example, which has seen significant recent reductions in crime, “continues to see gang murder after gang murder, the predictable consequence of the city’s ‘soft on crime’ stance.” It said crime in Chicago had “skyrocketed.” And it said that after a raid on MS-13 members in the Bay Area, “city officials seemed more concerned with reassuring illegal immigrants that the raid was unrelated to immigration than with warning other MS-13 members that they were next.”

The grants at stake provide federal funding for a host of functions in the criminal-justice system — including policing, victim-and-witness initiatives, crime prevention, drug-treatment programs and technology improvements.

Representatives of the jurisdictions said they believed that they already had been complying with federal law and disputed Sessions’s characterization of what was happening.

Zach Butterworth, the director of federal relations for the city of New Orleans and executive counsel to the mayor, said that the city welcomed the letter and would respond next week telling Sessions they were fully complying with federal law. He said that sanctuary city was an ill-defined term and New Orleans did not accept the moniker.

“There’s a lot of political talk, but there’s no legal analysis,” Butterworth said. “We say we’re not one because we follow federal law.”

While the city tells its police officers not to ask people they encounter about their immigration status, it does not block them from talking to Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents, Butterworth said. He said the city updated its policy to better reflect federal law last year.

“If they need one more letter, we’re happy to send it, and we’ll get it turned around quickly,” Butterworth said.

Michael Hernández, the communications director for Miami-Dade County, said Mayor Carlos A. Giménez (R) “strongly believes that we are in compliance” with the law, and noted that the county had begun earlier this year to honor all requests from ICE to detain potential illegal immigrants taken into custody on local charges. That move prompted Trump to praise the county in January. “Right decision. Strong!” he wrote on Twitter. Sessions himself said in a recent Fox News appearance he was “pleased that Miami complied.”

Hernández said the county had stopped honoring the requests in 2013 because the federal government was not providing reimbursement for the cost of detaining suspected illegal immigrants, but, fearing the loss of federal funding, officials had decided to change course.

“We never proclaimed to be a sanctuary community before then, and we haven’t since,” Hernández said. “We always have worked with federal authorities on all matters, including immigration.”

Seth Stein, a spokesman for city hall in New York City, said the administration’s push was “nothing new” and the “grandstanding shows how out of touch the Trump administration is with reality.”

“Contrary to their alternative facts, New York is the safest big city in the country, with crime at record lows in large part because we have policies in place to encourage cooperation between NYPD and immigrant communities,” he said.

Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele said in a statement officials were “in compliance with the law and will share the required legal opinion by the date requested,” though the Justice Department’s comments about illegal immigration and violent crime were “neither accurate nor productive.”

“Milwaukee County has its challenges but they are not caused by illegal immigration,” Abele said. “My far greater concern is the proactive dissemination of misinformation, fear, and intolerance.”

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel (D) said in a statement: “Neither the facts nor the law are on their side. Regardless, let me be clear: Chicago’s values and Chicago’s future are not for sale.”

The law that Sessions wants enforced is very narrow, and it would not bar any of the policies that people generally associate with sanctuary jurisdictions.

When someone is arrested on a local crime, their fingerprints are run through the FBI database, and — whether local authorities like it or not — ICE can tell if they are in the country illegally. It then often will send a request to local authorities to detain such people.

Refusing to honor such a request would not necessarily violate federal law. But telling local police officers, for example, that they could not give information to their ICE counterparts might.

The Obama administration also had considered compliance with the law a requirement for receiving Justice Department grants, and in response to the Inspector General’s Office report, even issued guidance on the subject. Cities, though, have said they are worried that Sessions’s threats are not mere talk.

Seattle, San Francisco and Santa Clara County have actually sued over the matter, asking a federal judge to block Trump’s executive order and stop Sessions from making good on his threat. The Justice Department has fought the cases in court, and acting assistant attorney general Chad Readler argued at a recent hearing that it was premature for the judge to consider because the Justice Department had not yet taken any sort of “enforcement action.”

Paris Champs Elysees attack gunman named as Karim Cheurfi

Bullet holes could be seen on a window on the Champs Elysees on Friday

The gunman killed after shooting dead a policeman on the Champs Elysees has been named by the Paris prosecutor as Karim Cheurfi, a convicted criminal.

He used a Kalashnikov assault rifle to kill the police officer with two bullets to the head, François Molins told journalists in the French capital.

A note defending so-called Islamic State was found near his body.

Candidates in Sunday’s presidential election have been accused of exploiting the attack politically.

Cheurfi had four criminal convictions, the prosecutor said.

Friday is the last day of campaigning before Sunday’s presidential election.

The killer had spoken about wanting to kill police officers but had had no apparent link to Islamist radicalism, Mr Molins said.

What do we know about the killer?

Cheurfi was arrested and his home searched in February after an inquiry was opened over reports that he had been talking of killing police and getting weapons, Mr Molins said.

An undated photo of Karim Cheurfi has been circulating

Hunting knives, masks and a GoPro camera were found but this was not considered sufficient proof of his murderous intent.

« At that stage, no link with the radical Islamist movement was apparent, » the Paris prosecutor said. « Nothing justified further investigations by my office. »

Born on New Year’s Eve in 1977 in the Livry-Gargan suburb of north-eastern Paris, Cheurfi was jailed four times for attempted murder, violence and theft.

In April 2001, while driving a stolen car, he fired on and wounded two men who had chased him, one of them a plain clothes police officer.

He last emerged from prison in October 2015 and was living in the eastern suburb of Chelles.

His lawyer described him as psychologically fragile and neighbours in Chelles said he had never shown any interest in religion.

Three members of the gunman’s family have been arrested for questioning.

How did the attack unfold?

Driving an Audi, the gunman arrived in the Champs Elysees area at 20:47 (18:47 GMT) on Thursday and drove up to a police bus parked on the avenue, Mr Molins said.

Getting out, he opened fire at the driver’s window, killing a police officer inside. The officer has been named as Xavier Jugelé.

He then went around the bus and fired on two police officers posted outside a Turkish tourist office. It was announced earlier that two officers had been injured.

Security forces later shot Cheurfi dead.

Terrified eyewitnesses later recounted scenes of panic as they ran for cover.

Was Cheurfi acting alone?

French investigators are trying to find out whether he had accomplices.

IS announced soon after the attack that one of its « fighters » had carried out the attack but it named him as « Abu Yousif al-Belgiki [the Belgian] ».

« We don’t understand why Islamic State has identified the wrong person, » a police source was quoted by Reuters news agency as saying. « What does seem clear is that Islamic State was planning something. »

Who was the victim?

Police officer Xavier Jugelé, 37, was an active campaigner for gay rights, French media report.

An undated image of Xavier Jugelé has circulated on Twitter

Originally from the Loire Valley region in central France, he had been serving in the capital since 2014, French daily Liberation writes (in French).

On 13 November 2015, he was deployed to secure the area around the Bataclan concert hall after the IS attack, Le Parisien writes (in French).

When the venue reopened last November with a concert by Sting, Mr Jugelé was there again, telling the US’s People magazine: « I’m happy to be here… We’re here tonight as witnesses. Here to defend our civic values. This concert’s to celebrate life. To say no to terrorists. »

What is the election row about?

Leading candidates on the right were accused by Prime Minister Bernard Cazeneuve of cynically exploiting the attack in the final hours of the campaign (which ends at midnight local time on Friday).

The far right’s Marine Le Pen pledged to expel radical Islamists while the centre-right’s François Fillon talked of fighting « Islamist totalitarianism ».

Both also attacked the record of the Socialist government in handling law and order.

In Washington, US President Donald Trump, whose election win stunned much of the world last year, predicted in a tweet that the attack would « have a big effect on [the] presidential election ».
