Watch: ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ continues the smart marketing with the video for ‘Safar’

Moving from early professional life to a mid-career phase comes with vast changes. One realizes that roles aren’t always set in stone, and much depends on carving your own role and path ahead. Often, responsibilities shift from areas of core technical expertise to broader areas such as strategy, management and revenue. One is no longer expected to ‘perform tasks’, but to ‘set’, ‘lead’ and ‘drive’. At this stage, professionals can feel ill-equipped or sometimes just unsure. Furthering one’s education can bridge this gap, providing the skills and the cross-functional knowledge needed to step up.

Participating in a residential management program means taking a sabbatical – a challenging proposition at this stage of the career. Additionally, there’s a very real opportunity cost of forgoing your income for the period while paying for the education. For self-employed professionals and entrepreneurs, it may be altogether impossible to halt business or move cities.

HBX, the online learning initiative of Harvard Business School (HBS), provides business education to meet exactly these needs, while solving for the constraints of location and time. A variety of self-paced management courses, built on the tenets of the innovative HBS classroom pedagogy, offer an immersive and challenging learning experience through its interactive online learning platform. What makes it fun and effective is that the platform provides opportunities for, and organically supports, peer learning and knowledge-sharing across a global network.

HBX Platform | Real-time Map View Shows Profiles of ‘Classmates’ Across the Globe

Is ‘business knowledge’ required?

For mid-level professionals, who have typically spent 5-10 years in a specific industry and developed skills in a core discipline, the next level of growth demands familiarity with many other aspects of business – strategy, operations, negotiation, and finance to name some. Individual contributors need to develop a more generalist approach to make better business decisions.

For example, when a mid-level doctor or healthcare professional working for a hospital transitions to a senior or leadership role in hospital management, she needs to be able to make decisions, weighing multiple aspects, for several functions of the organization. This requires skills such as interpreting data, studying the market landscape and developing differentiated offerings, understanding the financial implications of operational decisions and analyzing pricing and consumer behavior. If she is comfortable with business concepts and armed with the right tools, she can drive better operational performance and profitability, as well as enhance patient experience at the hospital. This ultimately leads to achieving both individual and business growth.

As Nupur Kohli, Doctor and Healthcare Entrepreneur (and an award winning TEDx speaker from Netherlands), who participated in the HBX programme says, “As a medical doctor, I never received a business education. However, in healthcare it is very relevant and important to have business knowledge, especially if one at some point wants to start their own practice. I now have a better insight into how a business should function and with that, I also better understand the business aspects of a medical practice or hospital.”

This extends across industries. For example, an IT professional working for a tech company could help his organization develop innovative ideas and diversify revenue sources by developing a more holistic view of the business and its services.

Active learning from a rich virtual platform

HBX facilitates a holistic understanding of business through courses that are designed for real-world problem-solving, active and social learning. These courses are delivered through an online platform that leverages the HBS ‘case-based pedagogy’. Students watch short, highly produced videos with professors and industry experts, and utilize innovative interactive tools to deepen their learning of the course concepts.

Instead of starting with theory, HBX participants start by grappling with a business problem – with real world data and the complexity in which a business leader would have to make a decision – and learn the theory inductively. Working professionals find it instantly relatable and easier to apply learnings to their immediate contexts.

Says past HBX participant Aravind Sivashankara, Assistant General Manager, Product Development, at Flytxt, India (a big data analytics software products company), “One of the most insightful components of this course was the detailed case studies on other companies that had similar challenges. I can use the concepts directly in my day-to-day job. Concepts like “jobs to be done” can be directly applied in building product roadmaps, product specifications for new products, and in creating marketing collaterals. Concepts such as “RPP” (Resources, Processes Priorities) are evergreen and can be directly applied in competitive profiling and strategic planning.”

Questions, based on case studies, can be in the form of either a poll or reflections. Everyone’s answers are then visible to the ‘classroom’. In the words of Professor Bharat Anand, Faculty Chair, HBX, “This turns out to be a really important distinction. The answers are being updated in real-time. You can see the distribution of answers, but you can also see what any other individual has answered, which means that you’re not anonymous.” Students have real profiles and get to know their ‘classmates’ and learn from each other. The social learning aspect brings forth perspectives and insights from other participants with diverse backgrounds who are working in different markets and industries. For professionals, this is a significant difference from learning on the job. They imbibe learnings from contexts different from theirs and are exposed to things that they may not discover on their own.

Programs Offered Today

HBX currently offers a variety of programs such as CORe (Credential of Readiness), which consists of three courses – Business Analytics, Economics for Managers and Financial Accounting – Negotiation Mastery, Leading with Finance and Disruptive Strategy. The HBX portfolio is growing, and new courses will be added in the coming months.

Course durations range from 6 to 17 weeks. The courses are flexible, allowing participants to study on their own schedules while meeting regular weekly deadlines. The deadlines ensure that the cohort remains on roughly the same schedule, facilitating the social aspect of learning.

Upon successful completion of the courses, students will receive a Certificate from HBX and Harvard Business School. They will also be invited to the annual on-campus HBX ConneXt event to meet peers from around the world, hear from faculty, and experience the HBS campus.

Interested candidates must submit a free, 10-15-minute application that is reviewed by the HBX admissions team by the deadlines noted on the HBX website. For more information and frequently asked questions, please review the HBX website.

Fiksu: iOS marketing costs fell 7% in May but Android rose 28%

iOS marketing costs fell 7 percent from the previous month in May, but May marketing costs rose 28 percent on Android as the platforms continue to diverge when it comes to user-acquisition campaign costs, according to mobile marketing firm Fiksu DSP.

The iOS data shows that mobile marketers are becoming savvier about creating efficient marketing campaigns for apps and games, Fiksu DSP said. More marketers are launching video ad campaigns that efficiently target the right users, and that is driving down the cost per purchaser (CPP), a measure of the cost of acquiring users who make purchases in games or mobile apps.

“Game developers that take advantage of the efficiency of video ads will get the best bang for their marketing buck,” said Matt McGinty, chief revenue officer of Fiksu DSP, in a statement. “With users that are already receptive to visual, immersive experiences, game apps are perfectly suited for video-based mobile ad campaigns.”

Cost per mille (CPM, the cost to buy media) fell 21 percent on iOS to $5.94 while it rose 14 percent on Android to $2.34.

CPP decreased year over year by 25 percent on iOS and 28 percent on Android. And CPM rose by 24 percent on iOS year over year and fell 16 percent on Android.

With an overall decline in competition on iOS, media costs (CPM) fell 21 percent since last month. While CPM increased year over year, the recent trend suggests marketers are creating more efficient mobile campaigns, Fiksu DSP said. At the same time, both CPP and CPM rose on Android for the first time in months. Due to the overall decreased competition on Android, as compared to iOS, marketers are taking advantage of the bargain prices to acquire new users, which is driving up costs.

“iOS has been the gold standard for mobile marketing. However, marketers are starting to place more value on Android. With more bang for their marketing buck, marketers are able to reach users on Android without paying premium prices,” said McGinty. “As this trend continues, we expect media costs to eventually rise in tandem with the competition. Summer is typically marked by slower months for competition on mobile, and marketers will likely take advantage of this opportunity to reach new users at a low cost while still creating the highly visual video content that users love.”

While marketers are seeing the value of Android, the upcoming release of iOS 11 will present an opportunity for app marketers to reach new users. The new update is rumored to save users 50 percent of their storage by minimizing the size of videos and photos. Fiksu DSP’s most recent survey indicated that more than half of consumers deleted an app because they wanted more space for future apps, so this increased space could result in consumers’ willingness to download new apps.

“New device and software launches have a significant impact in the real-time bidding market and the fluctuation of media costs. We expect the highly anticipated release of iOS 11 to result in an upsurge in spend on iOS to reach these users,” said McGinty. “This new opportunity to reach new users who otherwise may have been unreceptive to downloading new apps is sure to drive up both competition and media costs.”

He added, “Brands and agencies are always looking for self-serve options when it comes to app marketing. We’re now seeing more gaming-app marketers ask for this as well in order to have total control over [whom] they target and [whom] they exclude from campaigns.”

What You Need To Know About Social Video Marketing In 2017

Photographer: Chris Ratcliffe/Bloomberg

Recently, a spate of studies about social video populated my inbox, mainly from companies that offer tools for the art of catching attention with moving pixels. Not surprisingly for many reasons, the theme was social video marketing is vital for businesses today.

“Businesses need to learn to ‘speak video’ fluently if they want to connect with their customers on social media, » says Brad Jefferson, CEO of Animoto, in a press release behind the online video creation company’s survey.

But where and when to speak that fluently is another question, according to Lux Narayan, CEO of Unmetric, a social analytics platform, which did a study of Facebook vs. YouTube in regards to major brand video success.

« The most important consideration for brands when creating and publishing videos, » says Narayan, « is to look to data to make the most informed decisions on the right content and channel. »

Okay, you might have noticed a trend already: Both companies claim their findings support the overall mission of their services. That’s a given with these studies, but if you look over the findings, important insights await. After all, companies like Animoto and Unmetric, as well as video creation platform Wyzowl, know their field and how to collect information about it. And when they all come out with studies around the same time, important trends emerge.

Here’s what they found:

It’s getting crowded

According to data from a Wyzowl survey, video marketing creation is not only growing among business marketing professionals, it also a preferred way to consume.

When asked, « Where both text and video are available on the same web page, how would you prefer to learn about a product or service? »

  • 80 percent said video.

Great! But here’s the other key answer Wyzowl found:

When companies were asked … « Does your business use video as a marketing tool? »

  • 63 percent said yes.

That means the other third of companies are at a critical point. Either they will never have a video strategy or they’re late. Because for those who are using video, almost 99 percent said they plan to continue to do so.

There is no one place to post

The boundaries of where social video can go pushes outward every day. But while Snapchat and Instagram are clearly getting marketers’ attention, Facebook and YouTube still dominate the conversation. According to Narayan, YouTube’s advantage of being the first to the masses still matters, at least for now.

Nine people were shot at a gender reveal party in Ohio, according to multiple reports.
Time

CINCINNATI — The family had gathered Saturday to celebrate an upcoming life.

But by Sunday morning, they were beginning to think about planning a funeral and mourning the loss of a fetus.

A 21-year-old mother-to-be invited friends and relatives to her home in Colerain Township in the 9900 block of Capstan Drive to reveal that she was pregnant and would give birth to a baby boy.

The party had ended, but more than a dozen stayed behind. The group had just turned out the lights to watch one of the “Spider-Man” films when two men in hoodies came in the front door. They sprayed the living room with gunfire, said a family member who was at the party and asked not to be identified because she feared for her safety.

Related:

Autum Garrett, 22, of Huntington, Ind., was killed and eight others were injured, including three children ages 8, 6 and 2. Two adults remained hospitalized at University of Cincinnati Medical Center Sunday evening.

Garrett suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. Police had not made any arrests by Sunday evening.

The children did not suffer life-threatening wounds and were treated at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Colerain Township Police Chief Mark Denney said. He did not know if the children remained hospitalized Sunday evening.

« I want to express our deepest sympathies for the victims and families in last night’s tragedy, » he said. « This is a significant issue when there is a shooting of three kids. »

No one had been arrested Sunday afternoon. Denney said authorities had not yet developed a motive. He declined to name the other victims but said they all are cooperating with police. Police also did not provide any description of the suspects.

« We have interviewed those who were medically able, » he said, adding that he could not confirm the loss of the fetus but had seen those reports.

Nine people were shot, one of whom died, at a home on Capstan Drive in Colerain Township Saturday. Some profanity included.

A family member said Garrett is a cousin to the pregnant woman who lost her fetus after being shot in the thigh. That woman had been released from the hospital by Sunday morning.

Four other relatives, including three more children, attended the party but were not hurt.

Denney said police found a gun outside the home but it was not used in the shooting. Two handguns were used in the shooting and there was no return fire, he said. He did not know how many shots were fired.

Denney said eight of his officers worked overnight on the case. Cincinnati Police and federal authorities are assisting.

« We are just in the beginning stages of this, » Denney said at a Sunday afternoon news conference. « There’s a lot more questions I can’t answer than I can. »

One family member, who was shot at the party and asked not to be named out of fear of retaliation, said relatives are perplexed about a motive.

At least four people called 911 to report the 11:21 p.m. shooting. Some were partygoers and were hurt. At times, screaming and children crying drowned out one callers’ voice.

« I think a baby’s been shot. I think I got hit, » one caller said. « There’s a whole lot of people here shot.

« They just ran in and started shooting. »

Another caller told police she was sitting outside in a car and saw a person in a blue hoodie sweatshirt and another in a green hoodie sweatshirt go into the home. Then, she heard gunfire and saw them run out of the home southwest toward Redskin Drive. The home is just east of Colerain Avenue.

Denney said he did not want to alarm residents in the working-class neighborhood, which is just southeast of the Colerain Avenue exit off of Interstate 275. But he said they should remain cautious, keep their doors locked and their lights on.

« This is a sad day for all of our community, » City Administrator Dan Meloy said.

Many residents awoke to the news Sunday morning.

Neighbors, some still in robes or walking their dogs, milled about discussing the shooting and the changes the area has experienced in recent years. Several said drug dealing has become more pervasive.

Shawn Fee said he thought television crews were at his home to talk to him about recent storm damage. Instead, he learned of the mass shooting just down the block.

“There’s a lot of drugs in this neighborhood, » Fee said. “Everything from prescription to heroin to weed.”

Another neighbor said he’s called police several times about drug deals he has witnessed.

That man, who asked not to be named for fear of retaliation, said the shooting sounded like firecrackers. By the time he went outside, he saw multiple squad cars and at least three ambulances parked near his home.

A woman, who was at the party and told him her daughter was shot to death, was sitting on his driveway when he came out. « She was crying, crying, crying, » he said. « It’s one thing to come in and find a relative dead. It’s another thing to watch it happen. I feel so bad for her. »

He said he also saw paramedics attending to two school-aged children and a smaller child in the back of the ambulance. The children were all wearing pajamas and did not appear to be hurt, he said.

The shooting is the largest in the Tristate since the mass shooting at Cameo nightclub on Kellogg Avenue in Cincinnati. Seventeen people were shot and two died from the March 26 shooting. Last year, eight family members were shot and killed in their home in rural Pike County, about 90 miles from Cincinnati.

Denney asked that anyone with information call 513-321-COPS or Crimestoppers at 513-352-3040. Callers can remain anonymous.

« Somebody has information about this, » he said. « When three kids get shot, someone has to step forward. »

Senate GOP returns from break no closer to Obamacare deal

Senate Republicans appear miles away from their long-sought repeal of Obamacare, returning to Washington on Monday with just a few weeks to put the pieces back together before they could be forced to abandon their partisan attempts at a health care overhaul altogether.

Over the July 4 recess, conservative demands hardened and surprising opposition to the Senate GOP’s first stab revealed itself in red states like North Dakota and Kansas. Republicans sniped over the merits of deregulating the health insurance industry and GOP senators began floating exit strategies in case they can’t agree on legislation, ranging from working with Democrats to amend Obamacare to simply repealing the law and figuring out how to replace it later.

Story Continued Below

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell isn’t giving up yet, and his staff and allies toiled over the break to fashion a compromise that can get 50 of the Senate GOP’s 52 senators on board. The calculating Kentucky Republican could still find a deal that unites his fractious party. But McConnell and his whip, John Cornyn of Texas, are facing the party’s toughest legislative task since taking the majority in 2014.

At best, the repeal effort stayed stuck in neutral over the past nine days, several Republicans familiar with the ongoing negotiations said. At worst, the bill McConnell unveiled before the recess has little chance of being saved.

“My view is it’s probably going to be dead,” Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said on “Face the Nation” on Sunday. “I fear that it’s going to fail.”

White House chief of staff Reince Priebus said on « Fox News Sunday » that such a result would be unacceptable. The rest of President Donald Trump’s agenda is already moving glacially through Congress. If the GOP’s six-month effort on health care is scuttled ahead of the August recess, the party risks coming up empty-handed during what is typically the most fertile period of legislating in a president’s first term.

« The president expects them to get this done. The president expects the Senate to fulfill the promises it made to the American people, » Priebus said.

The president also addressed the subject Sunday in a tweet: « For years, even as a ‘civilian,’ I listened as Republicans pushed the Repeal and Replace of ObamaCare. Now they finally have their chance! »

This week, McConnell is expected to receive critical guidance from the Congressional Budget Office on whether a flurry of tweaks made in June will improve on initial estimates that the bill would result in 22 million fewer people with insurance. The nonpartisan office is also considering whether premiums can be reduced further.

McConnell’s initial proposal was broadly similar to a version that passed the House in May, and it would repeal most of the taxes created by the 2010 Obamacare law and scale back subsidies that help people buy insurance. It also would make major cuts to the Medicaid program, which covers low-income families and people with disabilities, and allow insurance companies to charge older people more for coverage.

After that bill failed to get enough support among Senate Republicans, the GOP asked the CBO to weigh proposals that would leave in place Obamacare’s taxes on Medicare and wealthy individuals, allocate more money for low-income people’s insurance, allow pre-tax money to pay for premiums and supply $45 billion to fight opioid funding, according to senators and aides.

Republicans will also learn the impact of a proposal from Sens. Mike Lee and Ted Cruz to drag the bill further to the right by eviscerating Obamacare’s insurance regulations.

In an interview Sunday evening, Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.) said that Cruz « is trying to deal in good faith » and that his amendment that would allow the sale of some cheap, deregulated insurance plans « can be resolved. »

« I hope it can be resolved in a manner that’s kept from undermining the pre-existing conditions component, » Corker said.

On Monday, McConnell will gather with his leadership team to begin plotting ways to resuscitate the ailing legislation. On Tuesday, the full GOP caucus will meet for the first time in nearly two weeks, which aides predicted would be a rowdy gathering pitting holdouts against McConnell allies. Republican senators will be pressured to choose between protecting Obamacare or supporting McConnell’s effort.

“Obamacare is failing. Whether or not we can come together, I don’t know. Mitch is trying,” said Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) on “Meet the Press.” “My advice is, if it does fail, work together in a bipartisan fashion to replace it.”

Rather than boasting about their chances of success, Republicans have spent the past few days fixated on what happens if McConnell does not succeed. The leader himself has said that doing nothing is not an option and that, if their repeal effort fails, the GOP will have to work with Democrats to stabilize unsteady individual insurance markets. In June, McConnell told Trump directly that if Senate Republicans could not agree on how to replace Obamacare, the party would have to negotiate with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).

Conservatives would rather repeal Obamacare immediately and devise a replacement plan later if the party’s simultaneous efforts fail. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin predicted Sunday that if the Senate bill fails, Trump will advocate for a straight-up repeal.

Yet other Republicans disagree with that approach, and it seems unlikely 50 senators would agree to repeal Obamacare without a replacement plan in hand.

“Non-starter. There will be uncertainty in the insurance markets. Premiums will rise,” Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-La.) said on “Fox News Sunday.” “I think it’s wrong; I think it betrays President Trump’s campaign pledges.”

Mnuchin also backed Cruz’s and Lee’s amendment despite opposition from moderates, amplifying the party’s internal discord.

“I’m very hopeful that his plan and his changes will get supported,” Mnuchin said of Cruz on ABC’s “This Week.”

Cruz and Lee, a Texan and Utahn, are an imminent problem for McConnell. They worked alongside leadership for months but now are demanding a more conservative approach than the GOP’s initial draft. Conservative groups and the Trump administration now support their addition, highlighting a clash among Republican senators with differing health care ideologies. The bill almost certainly would fail without Cruz and Lee’s support.

The duo spent the break advocating for their Consumer Freedom Act, which would allow the sale of cheap, deregulated health care plans alongside Obamacare-compliant plans with protections for pre-existing conditions and other minimum benefits. They argue that allowing more diversity in insurance plans would reduce premiums, but critics say the approach would shift sick people into one risk pool and healthy people into another, a recipe for a market meltdown.

Lee will vote against any bill that does not include their amendment or something similar that guts regulations, his office said.

« Sen. Lee has been flexible and consistent from Day One. Americans need regulatory relief from Obamacare, and he will not vote for something that does not provide that relief. [The Consumer Freedom Amendment] is that bare minimum relief,” said spokesman Conn Carroll.

But Republican senators like Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Susan Collins of Maine argued against such an amendment over the recess. Grassley warned that it could be “subterfuge to get around pre-existing conditions.”

Cruz said on ABC’s “This Week” that Grassley was borrowing his talking points from Schumer, a serious charge in GOP circles.

“The Consumer Freedom option is the key to bringing Republicans together and getting this passed,” Cruz said. “What’s being repeated [by Grassley] is what Chuck Schumer said this week.”

Trump’s Son Met With Russian Lawyer After Being Promised Damaging Information on Clinton

While President Trump has been dogged by revelations of undisclosed meetings between his associates and the Russians, the episode at Trump Tower is the first such confirmed private meeting involving his inner circle during the campaign — as well as the first one known to have included his eldest son. It came at an inflection point in the campaign, when Donald Trump Jr., who served as an adviser and a surrogate, was ascendant and Mr. Manafort was consolidating power.

It is unclear whether the Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, actually produced the promised compromising information about Mrs. Clinton. But the people interviewed by The Times about the meeting said the expectation was that she would do so.

When he was first asked about the meeting on Saturday, Donald Trump Jr. said that it was primarily about adoptions and mentioned nothing about Mrs. Clinton.

But on Sunday, presented with The Times’s findings, he offered a new account. In a statement, he said he had met with the Russian lawyer at the request of an acquaintance from the 2013 Miss Universe pageant, which his father took to Moscow. “After pleasantries were exchanged,” he said, “the woman stated that she had information that individuals connected to Russia were funding the Democratic National Committee and supporting Mrs. Clinton. Her statements were vague, ambiguous and made no sense. No details or supporting information was provided or even offered. It quickly became clear that she had no meaningful information.”

He said she then turned the conversation to adoption of Russian children and the Magnitsky Act, an American law that blacklists suspected Russian human rights abusers. The 2012 law so enraged President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia that he halted American adoptions of Russian children.

“It became clear to me that this was the true agenda all along and that the claims of potentially helpful information were a pretext for the meeting,” Mr. Trump said.

Two people briefed on the meeting said the intermediary was Rob Goldstone, a former British tabloid journalist and the president of a company called Oui 2 Entertainment who has worked with the Miss Universe pageant. He did not immediately respond to messages seeking comment.

Mark Corallo, a spokesman for the president’s lawyer, said on Sunday that “the president was not aware of and did not attend the meeting.”

Lawyers for Mr. Kushner referred to their statement a day earlier, confirming that he voluntarily disclosed the meeting but referring questions about it to Donald Trump Jr. Mr. Manafort declined to comment. In his statement, Donald Trump Jr. said he asked Mr. Manafort and Mr. Kushner to attend, but did not tell them what the meeting was about.

Political campaigns collect opposition research from many quarters but rarely from sources linked to foreign governments.

American intelligence agencies have concluded that Russian hackers and propagandists worked to tip the election toward Donald J. Trump, in part by stealing and then providing to WikiLeaks internal Democratic Party and Clinton campaign emails that were embarrassing to Mrs. Clinton. WikiLeaks began releasing the material on July 22.

A special prosecutor and congressional committees are now investigating the Trump campaign’s possible collusion with the Russians. Mr. Trump has disputed that, but the investigation has cast a shadow over his administration.

Mr. Trump has also equivocated on whether the Russians were solely responsible for the hacking. On Sunday, two days after his first meeting as president with Mr. Putin, Mr. Trump said in a Twitter post: “I strongly pressed President Putin twice about Russian meddling in our election. He vehemently denied it. I’ve already given my opinion……”

On Sunday morning on Fox News, the White House chief of staff, Reince Priebus, described the Trump Tower meeting as a “big nothing burger.”

“Talking about issues of foreign policy, issues related to our place in the world, issues important to the American people is not unusual,” he said.

But Representative Adam B. Schiff of California, the leading Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, one of the panels investigating Russian election interference, said he wanted to question “everyone that was at that meeting.”

“There’s no reason for this Russian government advocate to be meeting with Paul Manafort or with Mr. Kushner or the president’s son if it wasn’t about the campaign and Russia policy,” Mr. Schiff said after the initial Times report.

Ms. Veselnitskaya, the Russian lawyer invited to the Trump Tower meeting, is best known for mounting a multipronged attack against the Magnitsky Act.

The adoption impasse is a frequently used talking point for opponents of the act. Ms. Veselnitskaya’s campaign against the law has also included attempts to discredit the man after whom it was named, Sergei L. Magnitsky, a lawyer and auditor who died in 2009 in mysterious circumstances in a Russian prison after exposing one of the biggest corruption scandals during Mr. Putin’s rule.

Ms. Veselnitskaya’s clients include state-owned businesses and a senior government official’s son, whose company was under investigation in the United States at the time of the meeting. Her activities and associations had previously drawn the attention of the F.B.I., according to a former senior law enforcement official.

Ms. Veselnitskaya said in a statement on Saturday that “nothing at all about the presidential campaign” was discussed at the Trump Tower meeting. She recalled that after about 10 minutes, either Mr. Kushner or Mr. Manafort left the room.

She said she had “never acted on behalf of the Russian government” and “never discussed any of these matters with any representative of the Russian government.”

The Trump Tower meeting was disclosed to government officials in recent weeks, when Mr. Kushner, who is also a senior White House aide, filed a revised version of a confidential form required to obtain a security clearance.

The Times reported in April that he had not disclosed any foreign contacts, including meetings with the Russian ambassador to the United States and the head of a Russian state bank. Failure to report such contacts can result in a loss of access to classified information and even, if information is knowingly falsified or concealed, in imprisonment.

Mr. Kushner’s advisers said at the time that the omissions were an error, and that he had immediately notified the F.B.I. that he would be revising the filing.

Mr. Manafort, the former campaign chairman, also recently disclosed the meeting, and Donald Trump Jr.’s role in organizing it, to congressional investigators who had questions about his foreign contacts, according to people familiar with the events. Neither Mr. Manafort nor Mr. Kushner was required to disclose the content of the meeting.

Since the president took office, Donald Trump Jr. and his brother Eric have assumed day-to-day control of their father’s real estate empire. Because he does not serve in the administration and does not have a security clearance, Donald Trump Jr. was not required to disclose his foreign contacts. Federal and congressional investigators have not publicly asked for any records that would require his disclosure of Russian contacts.

The New York Times would like to hear from readers who want to share messages and materials with our journalists.

But in an interview with The Times in March, he denied participating in any campaign-related meetings with Russian nationals. “Did I meet with people that were Russian? I’m sure, I’m sure I did,” he said. “But none that were set up. None that I can think of at the moment. And certainly none that I was representing the campaign in any way.”

In addition to her campaign against the Magnitsky Act, Ms. Veselnitskaya represents powerful players in Russia. Among her clients is Denis Katsyv, the Russian owner of Prevezon Holdings, an investment company based in Cyprus. He is the son of Petr Katsyv, the vice president of the state-owned Russian Railways and a former deputy governor of the Moscow region. In a civil forfeiture case in New York, the Justice Department alleged that Prevezon had helped launder money linked to the $230 million corruption scheme exposed by Mr. Magnitsky by putting it in real estate and bank accounts. Prevezon recently settled the case for $6 million without admitting wrongdoing.

Ms. Veselnitskaya and her client also hired a team of political and legal operatives in the United States. The team included Rinat Akhmetshin, an émigré to the United States who once served as a Soviet military officer and who has been called a Russian political gun for hire. Fusion GPS, a consulting firm that produced an intelligence dossier that contained unverified allegations about Mr. Trump, was also hired to do research for Prevezon.

The F.B.I. began a counterintelligence investigation last year into Russian contacts with any Trump associates. Agents focused on Mr. Manafort and a pair of advisers, Carter Page and Roger J. Stone Jr.

Among those now under investigation is Michael T. Flynn, who was forced to resign as Mr. Trump’s national security adviser after it became known that he had falsely denied speaking to the Russian ambassador about sanctions imposed by the Obama administration over the election hacking.

Congress later learned that Mr. Flynn had been paid more than $65,000 by companies linked to Russia, and that he had failed to disclose those payments when he renewed his security clearance and underwent an additional background check to join the White House staff.

In May, the president fired the F.B.I. director, James B. Comey, who days later provided information about a meeting with Mr. Trump at the White House. According to Mr. Comey, the president asked him to end the bureau’s investigation into Mr. Flynn; Mr. Trump has repeatedly denied making such a request. Robert S. Mueller III, a former F.B.I. director, was then appointed as special counsel.

The status of Mr. Mueller’s investigation is not clear, but he has assembled a veteran team of prosecutors and agents to dig into any possible collusion.

DevOps – The Journey to Value Stream

Software is changing every industry. Think about Tesla disrupting the automotive industry, Airbnb, and Uber, the list goes on. Each leads with software to create an entirely new experience for the customer. This radical shift is causing traditional companies in all sectors to innovate and compete-they know that better customer experiences fuel business, and software lets them deliver those experiences to win, delight, and keep customers.

So organizations’ quest to deliver better experiences through faster, better software by using DevOps tools and practices. As they strive for continuous delivery, continuous integration, continuous testing, continuous monitoring and continuous feedback, they discover an ingredient is missing. What is it?

View General Session: ▸ Here

What would allow development practices to stay continuously aligned to business objectives? Measurement. Good measurement comprises the ability to integrate the many tools within DevOps, analyze and associate the myriad of events, and report on the findings and measure the value an organization is receiving from these tools and processes. Organizations recognize this and are exploring the discipline of value stream mapping (VSM), a lean measurement technique, to ensure that the software they are producing is poised to offer continuous improvements to customers’ experience of products and services.

In his General Session at @DevOpsSummit at 20th Cloud Expo, Thomas Hooker, Silicon Valley technologist and vice president of marketing for CollabNet, presented his popular talk titled « DevOps – The Journey to Value Stream. » This educational session provided a deep look into the market drivers behind DevOps and enterprise Agile management today.

View this general session and learn exactly how your organization can benefit by applying value stream mapping to DevOps initiatives, tools, teams, and processes to tap the full business potential of DevOps.

Trump keeps it friendly with Xi at G-20 on North Korea threat

<!– –>

U.S. President Donald Trump took a conciliatory tone on Saturday at a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping where the leaders agreed to keep working on two pressing issues: the nuclear threat posed by North Korea and bilateral trade irritants.

Is the honeymoon already over for Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump?

Trump campaigned in last year’s presidential election on cracking down on China for its trade practices, but he softened his rhetoric after taking office, saying he wanted to work with China on the nuclear issue.

When the two leaders first met in April at Trump’s Florida resort, they appeared to hit it off. Trump called Xi a « good man » as he urged him to use Beijing’s economic clout to force North Korea to curb its nuclear weapons program.

Lately, Trump has expressed some impatience on China’s role in North Korea – particularly after Pyongyang launched an intercontinental ballistic missile that some experts believe could have the range to reach Alaska, and parts of the U.S. West Coast.

His administration made new arms sales to Taiwan, imposed sanctions on two Chinese citizens and a shipping company and put China on a global human trafficking list. It also accused a Chinese bank of laundering money for Pyongyang.

The White House is also debating trade actions against Beijing, including tariffs on its steel exports and a few days before the G20 talks, Trump complained that trade between China and North Korea had grown.

But he showed none of that impatience on Saturday, when the leaders met at the invitation of Xi at the tail end of the G20 in Germany.

« It’s an honor to have you as a friend, » Trump told Xi, telling him he appreciated actions he had already taken on North Korea.

« As far as North Korea is concerned, we will have, eventually, success. It may take longer than I’d like. It may take longer than you’d like. But there will be success in the end one way or the other, » Trump said.

Speaking to reporters later on Air Force One, U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said the Trump-Xi meeting lasted over an hour-and-a-half, and they had « substantive discussions » about how to deal with North Korea together.

« In regards to China, we had very direct discussions about North Korea. We had very direct discussions about military and security cooperation, » Mnuchin said.

« I think that President Trump made very clear to President Xi that he is focused on this issue, and wants to move forward and make progress. And I think President Xi gave a very interesting perspective from their standpoint, » he added.

‘CONTROL THE SITUATION’

For his part, Xi told Trump that stronger China-U.S. ties were conducive to stability and prosperity amid global conflicts, and had made « new progress » in some areas « despite some sensitive issues », Xi said, according to state news agency Xinhua.

Xi stressed the importance of talks with North Korea, and said China’s navy will join next year’s U.S.-led Pacific Rim military exercises.

Xinhua said Xi stressed to Trump China’s position that it adheres to the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and maintaining peace and stability there.

While China has been angered by North Korea’s repeated nuclear and missile tests, it also blames the United States and South Korea for worsening tension with their military exercises.

« China has many times talked about its principled position, namely that at the same time as the international community making necessary responses to North Korean acts that go against U.N. Security Council resolutions, they must step up efforts to promote talks and manage and control the situation, » Xinhua said, citing Xi.

Xi also reiterated China’s opposition to the U.S. deployment of the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system in South Korea, Xinhua said. China says THAAD threatens its security, despite U.S. and South Korean assurances it is aimed only at defending against North Korea.
