China’s Online Video Site "Ac Fun" Raises $60M After "Bullet Screen" Success

China-based video site, AcFun, has announced a new round of funding totaling $60 million from Softbank Capital, the same company that took a majority stake in streaming video site DramaFever in 2014. An anime site that has been most known for its “bullet screen” feature, had previously raised upwards of $50 million from the Chinese video platform Youku Tudou as part of its Series A round just last year. The company at that point was valued at roughly $200 million, according to a report.

AcFun Player_VideoInkAcFun features content targeted at young adults ranging from general anime entertainment, gaming, sports and music. It’s “bullet screen” feature enables text messages to appear inside of the video during playback and in-real time.

This functionality has not hopped to the United States just yet, but the closest functionality would be WhipClip or go90’s sharing feature that allows fans to clip content and instantly socialize that content across various channels like Twitter or Facebook. Second screen apps have also brought live tweeting into reality television but, again, the application has not jumped to the online video space just yet.
