Aloha Editor

aloha editor windows 10

Aloha Editor is one of the most powerful web-based HTML5 editors you can find. It is also very small, and simple to use, so beginners shouldn’t have problems accustoming to it. Aloha allows you to edit pretty much any DOM (document object model) element. You just need to embed the code within an online document.

This browser-based tool allows you to various types of content, including tickers, sliders, accordions, or image descriptions in slideshows. Additionally, you can just select a piece of text, and a floating menu will immediately show, allowing you to change the font size, face, insert tables and more.

Aloha Editor is perfect if you need to add a few corrections to your site that’s already online. However, this program doesn’t come with the best support documentations, as tutorials and manuals of how to install and use Aloha are almost impossible to find, so you’ll have to get around on your own.

Aloha Editor is available for free, so if you want to download it, you can do so from this link.

Sublime Text 2

sublime text windows 10

Sublime Text 2 is also one of the most recognizable HTML5 editors on the market. This program is used by millions of developers, and they only have a good word for it. It’s very simple, yet powerful tool that can satisfy every developer’s needs.

Sublime is also very versatile and customizable, because of its extensions and JSON files. Downloading and installing add-ons in Sublime Text via its Package Control is a piece of cake. So, it’s no wonder whey more and more professional developers choose Sublime Text 2 as their number one tool for developing in HTML5.

Sublime Text 2 is heavily supported, which means you basically can find tutorials, guides and documentation about this program anywhere.

Sublime Text 2 is free to download and use, but if you want to publish your work somewhere, you’ll have to pay $70 for a commercial license. This still is a fair deal, considering what can you do with this program.

If you want to download Sublime Text 2, you can do so for free from this link.

Notepad++

notepad++ windows 10

Notepad++ is another classic tool for HTML5 development. You probably used this tool in school while you were learning fundamentals of HTML. However, Notepad++ is still very popular, and useful. However, you won’t find some of the most advanced features in this program, so it’s more recommended to beginners.

However, the lack of features can be compensated by the high number of plugins available for this program. User interface of Notepad++ can be a little bit confusing sometimes, but nothing too serious. You can find many useful plugins for Notepad++ here.

Notepad++ is available for free, and you can download it from this link.

BlueGriffon

bluegriffon

BlueGriffon is another web-based HTML editor, but it’s different from other browser-based tools. This program can be installed on a computer, and used, even if you’re not connected to internet at the moment. This ability is provided by Firefox’ Gecko rendering engine.

This program is very simple in design, therefore it should be very simple to use, even for users with less experience. BlueGriffon is a WYSIWYG editor with support for HTML4 and HTML5, as well as XHTML. It also has the ability of directly embedding HTML5 audio and video directly into a webpage.

All important HTML elements, like header, footer, and paragraph tags are listed in a simple dropdown menu. So, developers can insert them easily into a webpage, with just a few mouse clicks. All in all, BlueGriffon is a great tool, and it competes with some other programs for the title of the best web-based HTML5 editor.

BlueGriffon is available for free, and you can download it from this link.

Maqetta

maqetta windows 10

Maqetta is an open source WYSIWYG HTML-5 editor. It is very feature-rich, with features like developer/design workflow, visual page editor, evaluation and commenting, sinter activity sans programming, wireframe, theme editor, themes and widgets, JavaScript libraries, mobile authoring.

The program itself was developed in HTML, so works fluently in the browser-based environment. Maqetta provides support to all major browsers, including Google Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, but we haven’t tested it in Windows 10’s Microsoft Edge.

Maqetta includes:

  • “a WYSIWYG visual page editor for drawing out user interfaces
  • drag/drop mobile UI authoring within an exact-dimension device silhouette, such as the silhouette of an iPhone
  • simultaneous editing in either design or source views
  • deep support for CSS styling (the application includes a full CSS parser/modeler)
  • a mechanism for organizing a UI prototype into a series of “application states” (aka “screens” or “panels”) which allows a UI designer to define interactivity without programming
  • a web-based review and commenting feature where the author can submit a live UI mockup for review by his team members
  • a “wireframing” feature that allows UI designers to create UI proposals that have a hand-drawn look
  • a theme editor for customizing the visual styling of a collection of widgets
  • export options that allow for smooth hand-off of the UI mockups into leading developer tools such as Eclipse
  • Maqetta’s code base has a toolkit-independent architecture that allows for plugging in arbitrary widget libraries and CSS themes.”

This tool is available for free, and you can download it by visiting this link.

Aptana Studio 3

aptana windows 10

Apatna Studio 3 is another open source HTML5 editor. This program stands out for ‘open web development’, as developers can easily test their apps with a single setting. Besides HTML5, Apatana Studio 3 also supports other modern technologies, like JavaScript, CSS3, PHP, Rails, Ruby, and Python.

The tool is compatible with all major browsers, and features JavaScript Code assists, HTML, GIF incorporation, IDE Customization, operation wizard, and incorporated debugger.

App Developer Sues Apple Over Poor HTML5 Support

OK, so Apple gets sued… a lot. At this rate, you’d think people (and companies) would run out of things to take the mobile giant to court over. Nope, not a chance. The latest legal ruckus involves a developer called Nexedi, which is upset at Apple over… HTML?

Specifically, the company is despairing over Safari’s HTML5 support on iOS and macOS, which it states “is lagging behind” the competition:

The primary reason for starting this lawsuit is because we hope that it will help Apple to sooner support the latest Web and HTML5 standards on its iOS platform — the operating system used by all iPhones. Anyone running html5test (http://html5test.com/) on [their] iPhone will find out that current iOS support of HTML5 Web technologies is lagging behind other platforms.

One could argue Nexedi could come up with its own browser with HTML5 capabilities. Unfortunately, Nexedi states that if a developer tried to do this, they would be “banned from Apple’s App Store”:

We would be delighted at Nexedi to create a Web browser for iOS with better HTML5 support based on a recent version of Blink library for example. But as soon as we would publish it, it would be banned from Apple’s AppStore. Many developers have experienced this situation already. Many companies are being hurt by this situation. Some companies have already begged Apple to improve HTML5 support in iOS with little significant results.

With little recourse it seems, Nexedi decided a legal approach was the next step. And according to the company, which is based in France, the country’s laws could be on its side:

A few years ago, France passed a Law to protect small companies such as Nexedi against large companies that try to impose unbalanced contracts … [by] not allowing the publication in Apple’s AppStore of web browsers that are not based on Apple’s own Webkit raises in our opinion the same issues as if Carrefour (a company similar to Walmart) was not selling any beans but those based on Carrefour’s seeds. This may be legal in other countries but in France, it is most likely not.

Honestly, this could be the last we hear of Nexedi and its cause. But we know Europe in general is happy to chase companies like Apple, so who knows where this comparatively small grievance could lead? [Nexedi]

Gizmodo Australia is gobbling up the news in a different timezone, so check them out if you need another Giz fix.

French Company Sues Apple Because of Improper HTML5 Support …

Nexedi, a French software development company, is suing Apple in a French court because of the sorry state of HTML5 support on iOS, and because Apple actively prevents third-party browser engines from running on iOS.

The company filed a civil lawsuit in France because a local law gives it the best chances of succeeding in its effort. A local French law passed a few years back prevents large companies from imposing unbalanced contracts on smaller businesses.

Nexedi says that Apple forces software developers to sign an unfair contract when submitting an app to the iOS App Store that states that all web content should be handled by a WebKit-based browser engine.

The French company’s problem is that the WebKit engine is seriously lagging behind when it comes to supporting modern HTML5 features. Because Apple forces iOS app developers to use WebKit-based browsers, developers must invest serious time and effort into porting modern apps to work with the limited version of HTML5 supported in iOS, indirectly cutting down their profits.

There are two possible positive outcomes

Nexedi hopes that this lawsuit will force Apple to invest more in upgrading the WebKit engine to support the same modern HTML5 features supported by other browser vendors such as Google, Microsoft, or Mozilla, all of which have better browser engines than Apple.

This wouldn’t be a problem if these browsers, and their subsequent engines, wouldn’t be banned from the iOS App Store.

A second option that Nexedi would accept is if Apple allowed other browser engines on the iOS App Store, so software developers can run their web content in modern browsers and not the ancient Mobile Safari currently supported on iOS devices.

While Chrome and Firefox are available for iOS, they are not actual Chrome and Firefox, but empty UI shells that run on top of the old WebKit engine. While Chrome was initially built on the WebKit engine, Chrome development switched to the newer Blink engine developed in-house at Google.

Apple criticized before for the poor state of WebKit development

This is not the first instance when developers are driven mad by Apple’s lack of attention for WebKit and Safari development.

Last year, Nolan Lawson penned a scorching blog post which concluded that « Safari is the new IE. » The article criticized Apple staff for ignoring Safari development, which resulted in WebKit failing to support the latest Web standards.

Currently, WebKit (and inherently Safari) don’t support modern web technologies like service workers, Web RTC, or the WebM video format, just to name a few. These are critical features in today’s web.

« In the early 90s I have been an Apple developer myself, » Jean-Paul Smets, Nexedi CEO writes. « At that time Apple personal computers had the best support for TCP/IP and the Web. Other platforms such as Windows were lagging behind. Apple platforms could support more multimedia formats than others, even including Unix workstations. Nowadays it seems to be the opposite. »

Animoto Video Builder Is Aimed Right at Small Businesses

Video marketing is one of the skill sets that has become essential in today’s environment. If you think you can’t create professional quality video because you don’t have any experience, think again. Animoto’s Marketing Video Builder has everything you need to help you and your business standout in a video-first world.

The Marketing Video Builder was developed by Animoto, a company that has helped customers create more than 100 million videos over the past 10 years,  the company claims. Based on this experience, the new platform was designed from the ground up to address the specific needs of do-it-yourself marketers so they can easily make videos to be distributed across different channels.

In an exclusive email interview with Small Business Trends, Cyndi Knapic, Head of Animoto for Business, pointed out why small businesses need video marketing, and why Marketing Video Builder is the right tool to affordably create quality videos.

Knapic said the company conducted a survey earlier this year that revealed video marketing had a direct impact for 77 percent of the professional marketers and small business owners who tried it. Moreover, 60 percent stated they would increase their investment in video in the coming year.

The need to use video is being driven by social media channels, including Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, Snapchat and others. If a small business doesn’t have a presence on any of these platforms with the right content — which more and more includes video — it will be that much harder to connect and engage with its customers.

The Marketing Video Builder has starter story boards with a drag-and-drop interface that guides you to create videos with content you already have. The platform has custom branding, voice-over, advanced text control over video clips, photo collages, timing controls and a diverse library of commercially licensed music. Although all these features may sound intimidating, the company says this is far from the case.

Voice-Over

At the touch of a button you can record voice-over segments to tell your story with spoken word.

Text Control

You can customize the size, color, font and placement of text on video clips, photos, collage blocks or titles to give your creation a professional feel. Kipanic also pointed out in the interview, “Most content on both social media and mobile devices is consumed silently so I’d also highly recommend using text in your videos to optimize for sound-off viewing, which is quite easy to do with our Marketing Video Builder.”

Commercially Licensed Music

You have access to thousands of soundtracks from a wide range of genres to give your video the right feel and to communicate with your audience.

Collages and Layouts

This feature lets you use a split screen to share videos or photos along with text to showcase several images at the same time.

Mobile Apps

The free iPhone and Android apps let you create and share videos using the pictures and video clips in your phone or tablet or watch any videos you have made.

As Knapic explained, “We’ve done a lot of research studying what makes good marketing videos so successful. Our team of motion designers and engineers have made it super easy to emulate the things that make these videos successful.”  The platform is easy enough for small business owners without any experience to use, while at the same time delivering professional grade results good enough for a much larger brand.

Knapic explained, “The videos we deliver are of an incredibly high caliber of quality, but still financially and technically accessible for the small business customer.”

The product has already garnered testimonials from businesses large and small.

Crate and Barrell Vice President of Marketing, Suzy Cirulis described Animoto’s new tool as a quick and cost effective way to create video the same day using assets the company already had. She added, “The video received similar levels of impressions, clicks and engagements as other brand awareness campaigns that we’ve run that took us weeks to create or that we had to outsource.”

By contrast, Nu-Era Bakery is a small business based in West Virginia. Co-owner Libby Albright explained, “We don’t have the marketing budget to compete with corporate bakeries that sell in chain stores. With Animoto, for the first time, we’ve been able to bring our business to life through social media. Telling our story visually on social media has led to unexpected customer demand across the U.S. and we are going to expand our business to start shipping as a result.”

The platform is completely web-based, so he company says you won’t need any additional software or downloads. Instead, you can make your marketing video start to finish on Animoto.com.

Availability

Marketing Video Builder is now available in three different tiers, starting with Personal at $8 per month if you pay an annual subscription. With Personal you get 720P video resolution, more than 70 design-rich video styles, and 500+ music tracks with different genres.

The next level is Professional, and you can get it for $22 per month when you pay for a year. The video resolution goes up to 1080p, and you also get the same number of video styles as Personal, but it includes more than 20 premium video styles. You can use your own logo and add music from 2,000 tracks with a re-seller license to consumers.

The Business tier comes in at $34 per month with an annual subscription and you get the same features as the Professional tier, along with an extra 1,000 music tracks, a re-seller license to businesses and three user/seats.

There’s also a free 14 day trial that doesn’t require a credit card so you can have two weeks to experiment without commitment.
