3 brands that come alive life through video marketing in 2016

Video marketing is becoming one of the top ways to engage your audience. Why? It’s what the people want. Part of why we create content is to inform our prospects about our products and services. And four times as many people prefer watching product videos to reading about them, according to Animoto. Not only that, but Aberdeen reported using video increases revenue by 49 percent.

Developing a marketing strategy for this medium involves a lot of moving pieces. Will you choose animation or live action? Studio or on-location production? Testimonials with customers or scripted acting? Who will your actors be? What music will you use? What tone are you trying to convey?

With so many options to choose from, it can seem impossible to know what’s right for your brand. But you can start by scoping out what other brands are doing right. So let’s take a look at three of the best examples 2016 has to offer.

UberConference embraces the problem

If you’ve worked in an office setting, odds are you’ve experienced more than your fair share of conference call glitches – late dial-ins, technical snafus, ear-splitting feedback, you know the drill. UberConference captured all those pain points and more in this video, which shows they understand what their audience is going through.

“A brand that understands what its audience despises about an experience is the one that can reduce those pain points.”

The video strategy leans heavily on humor to show the viewers UberConference understands their frustrations. A brand that understands what its audience despises about their experience is likely to be the one that reduces those pain points, right? It certainly made an impression on Brafton Video Producer Hannah Perlmutter.

“Simply put, this video is hilarious,” Hannah said. “In addition, anyone who works in an office and has conference calls can relate.  it’s a breath of fresh air to see a conference call service actually poke fun at the mundane reality that are conference calls.”

HubSpot takes personalization to a new level

What makes for a memorable video? In a word: personality. Consumers want to know who they’re buying from, whether it’s a B2B or B2C relationship. HubSpot took this challenge literally and gave a handful of its employees each a handheld camera, most likely a GoPro, to film a day in their lives. Couple raw footage with clever editing, hints of that HubSpot orange and an upbeat soundtrack, and you’ve got an immersive experience that leaves a lasting impression.

“HubSpot’s Day in the Life videos are exciting. The upbeat music and fast-paced sequencing keep my eyes glued to the screen,” explained Kyle Gaw, Brafton’s Marketing Manager. “And the first-person perspective lets me imagine myself in that person’s shoes and get a sense of what life could be like if I worked for HubSpot.”

These videos are great from a recruitment standpoint, as potential employees can get a real sense of the HubSpot culture, the array of office amenities, the people they could one day work with, and even the surrounding communities of their different locations around the world. The personalized stories also humanize the brand and make them stand out from competitors, which can be the linchpin that turns a prospect into a client.

Hashtag’d mixes media to make impressions

One of the major video marketing trends we’ve seen arise in 2016 is the use of mixed media – that is to say, combining video and animation to really drive a message. A.J. Muffett, one of our videographers, pegged this demo video from Hashtag’d as a stellar example of blending concepts and video types.

“It’s hip, it’s quick, and the story is totally driven by the music,” A.J. said of the video. “Most brands will lean heavily on animation to explain how their products and services work, but Hashtag’d’s use of real people makes the product more tangible than an animated demo alone.”

The live scenes and still-frames sell viewers on the personal experience, but when it comes to explaining what the provider actually does, animations overlaid and spliced into the video help you understand the concept in seconds. All of that, coupled with perfectly orchestrated music, makes the experience feel seamless and simple, which is exactly what Hashtag’d is trying to impress upon the viewer about their service.

So, whether you’re promoting a product or your brand, you can learn a lot from UberConference, HubSpot and Hashtag’d. To connect with your audience, you should make it personal, make it real, and make it fun. These approaches are what viewers will remember in the long run.

Google Chrome’s Latest Update Uses HTML5 by Default …

In a move that was a long time coming, Google has now officially blocked Adobe Flash Player on Chrome. This means that content that needs Flash to run will require permission. Google moved gradually with this decision. They announced the plan in August and starting blocking Flash-based pages but it’s beginning with Chrome 55 where it has now truly bid farewell to Flash.

While HTML5 is now officially the content player for Chrome version 55, this doesn’t mean that Flash is gone permanently. Given that a number of sites still use Flash to display content, it makes sense to still leave it there. This time, however, it is disabled by default and users will have to enable it manually in order for a site to play its Flash content. Not only that, users will have to do the giving of permissions for every site.

So what happens to a site that runs on Flash? Content won’t display. This is where the manual permission giving comes into play. Since doing so would be rather tedious, Google has a plan mapped out. For now, they are enabling HTML5 for 1% of Chrome 55 users.

Starting January of 2017, users will be asked to run Flash on every site they have never visited. Restrictions would be tightened through what’s called the Site Engagement Index, a heuristic that uses a user’s browsing activity to determine how much they interact with a particular site.

In February 2017, Chrome 56 – the next major version – will be in its Stable stage. Currently, this version is available in the beta channel and those who are interested can test it out. For the beta test version, HTML5 has been enabled for 50% of users. By the time February hits, all users will have HTML5 enabled.

Google is hardly the first company who has bid farewell to Flash. Facebook switched to HTML5 for video content across all browsers in 2015. Even Adobe itself has encouraged users to turn to HTML5 for delivering content on the web. So given this turn of events, it’s not a surprise that Google would follow suit by completely abandoning Flash. It clearly has now begun but will be fully realized by 2017 with Chrome 56.

Chrome 55 is available on desktop computers running Mac, Windows and Linux. In addition, the version is also available for devices that run on iOS and Android. While there are changes that are applicable across platforms, there are also changes specific to a particular platform. For example, iOS users have requested for the removal of the All Bookmarks folder and that was granted. Android users, on the other hand, are now allowed to download music, videos and full web pages for offline viewing.

Apart from abandoning Flash, Chrome 55 also fixes an issue where the browser uses up a whole lot of memory. With version 55 now officially out, eyes are now turned towards Chrome 56 which is currently in beta mode. A version 57 is also in the works in the Development Channel.

What languages should I know for HTML5 game development?

As of now I only know a little HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. I am interested in creating an online multiplayer game

using HTML5 that can be played in a browser that will be hosted online 24/7. The game I want to create is fairly

simple, and won’t require amazing graphics or anything, because I’ll make them myself.

My question is, what are all the languages I will need to know, as well as any programs or services, to create the

game and a server to host the game? Keep in mind I don’t know much about game development in HTML5.

So far, this is what I think I’ll need to know:

– HTML5

– CSS3

– JavaScript

– Some server side language like PHP or Python

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Six Video Advertising Trends That Will Dominate 2017

Digital video advertising is a hot topic that’s about to reach its boiling point. No doubt driven by increasing consumption and Cisco’s much-quoted prediction that over 80% of internet traffic will be video by 2020, interest in digital video advertising is soaring and online video ad spend is expected to grow 31% next year.

But the video advertising landscape isn’t simply expanding, it is also advancing and evolving. After years of experience working in the industry, I am keenly aware that technological developments, new formats and emerging platforms are continually adjusting its direction. So what are the key trends that will dominate video advertising as we head into 2017?

The Future Of Video Advertising Is Social

Video ad spend on social networks is escalating for one simple reason: Social media is where the consumers are. The presidential election illustrated the extent to which we – rightly or wrongly – rely on social networks for news and information and a large proportion of the content consumed on these platforms is in video form. Social video ads are particularly popular among marketers looking to expand brand awareness, as video is a highly engaging format that creates an emotional connection with the viewer and is frequently shared.

Facebook – which receives over two-thirds of global social network ad revenue – is the major player here, but other networks are increasing their offering. Twitter recently opened up its ad program to allow content creators to monetize their videos with pre-roll content and Pinterest has launched promoted videos. Social video will continue to grow over the coming year with ad formats expanding to include native video and in-the-moment live stream ads using services such as Facebook Live.

Mobile Will Create More Opportunities

Mobile video is one of the fastest-growing ad formats – with almost a quarter of digital ad budgets already allocated to it – but its potential is only just beginning to be explored. Google has just introduced native video ads for mobile publishers to make mobile formats faster and more effective, and in 2017, further technological advances will allow mobile video advertising to become more engaging and creative. Advertisers will focus on building native, shareable experiences, and mobile video advertising will become increasingly affordable, making it more attractive to smaller businesses.
