ABC Is Marketing Season 2 of Marvel’s Agent Carter All Wrong (VIDEO)

When last we saw Peggy Carter, she was kicking ass, saving New York City, and polluting the Hudson River with Captain America’s blood. She’ll soon return in Season 2 of Marvel’s Agent Carter, which is set in the « glamorous » world of Los Angeles and is scheduled to premiere Tuesday, January 5 at 9pm on ABC. The network has released the first teaser trailer for Peggy’s latest adventure in the soul-crushing land of Hollywood, and it’s… weird. Take a look for yourself:

Why is ABC marketing Agent Carter like it’s one of the network’s casually daft melodramas instead of a well-written drama about the first female agent of the Strategic Scientific Reserve? Peggy is at the top of her game professionally and she’s routinely shown to be more capable, more intelligent, and more resourceful than the men around her. She’s unlike many of the women who make up ABC’s primetime schedule, women who are also successful in their careers but who tend to fall prey to their operatic love lives. That trailer does not adequately depict the superhero at Agent Carter‘s center. As the first major property within the MCU to be headlined by a woman, the show is an action-packed tale of adrenaline-fueled espionage and emotional complexity, and nowhere in that promo does that come through. From a tonal and thematic standpoint, the series depicted in that trailer feels like the polar opposite of what it actually is. You can do better, ABC.

And for the record, cutting together a bunch of scenes of Peggy punching people or holding a gun does not make her a badass when its framed in this way, and frankly, it’s no wonder people aren’t tuning in if that’s the type of show they think this is.

Marvel’s Agent Carter returns with a two-hour premiere Tuesday, January 5 at 9pm.
