Archives par mot-clé : video

The Las Vegas shooter had 16 guns. Here’s what we know about them.

While much remains unknown about the specific weapons Stephen Paddock fired from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, killing at least 58 people and injuring potentially hundreds more, Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said Monday that 16 firearms were found in the hotel room.

The sound of gunfire captured on videos recorded during the massacre indicates that Paddock used at least one automatic weapon, a type of firearm that is highly regulated in the United States though a fairly common find at gun shows and firing ranges, including one near Las Vegas that allows customers to shoot military-grade weapons.

It was unclear how Paddock would have acquired an automatic weapon, if he did use one. Those weapons can be legally owned if made before May 1986 and registered with the federal government, or owned by licensed dealers.

So far, at least one has been identified as an AK-47 type rifle, outfitted with a stand to steady it and improve accuracy, said people close to the ongoing probe. Lombardo said the weapons that have been recovered range in caliber from .223, which is associated with AR-15 style rifles, and .308, which is a caliber commonly used in hunting rifles. Lombardo was unsure if any of the weapons were automatic. Scopes were also recovered on the scene.

Agents with Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms have yet to determine if Paddock modified mechanical components to a semiautomatic rifle to make it fully automatic, Lombardo said, which would be illegal. He also could have used a legal modification like an attachable crank to simulate automatic fire, which depresses the trigger faster than a finger and can be bought online for as little as $40.

It is important to note the distinction between a semiautomatic rifle and a fully automatic weapon. Semiautomatic rifles such as the AR-15 patterned rifle — owned by millions of Americans and found on the scene after mass killings at San Bernardino, Calif.; Aurora, Colo., and Newtown, Conn. — are the civilian variant of the military’s M-16 and M-4 rifles.

One squeeze of the trigger means one round leaves the barrel, which physically limits the amount of fire to how quickly the operator can pull the trigger. AR-15 pattern rifles typically take 30-round magazines, which feeds ammunition into the weapon using a tension spring.

Some states, such as California, regulate the size of magazines, but Nevada does not. A trained shooter can easily remove one magazine from the weapon, load another from a tactical vest or pocket, and continue firing within seconds. There are higher-capacity magazines available, but they are prone to malfunctions and misfeeds.

An automatic weapon, by contrast, fires continuously as long as pressure is applied to the trigger and ammunition is available. While semiautomatic weapons are often incorrectly referred to as “machine guns,” an automatic weapon’s originally designed mechanical system — used to feed, eject and ready the next round — is what makes it a machine gun.

Semiautomatic weapons can also legally simulate automatic fire with “bump” modifications to the stock that reduces recoil and lets the shooter hold the weapon in a way that allows rapid fire, according to the Trace, a nonprofit website that examines gun violence in the United States.

Paddock’s choice of a firing position 400 yards from the stage at a high overlook suggests a plan of attack to fire into a densely packed area where accuracy would not be a top concern. That distance is near the 500-yard effective range for an M-4, but machine guns typically have longer barrels which extend range. A weapon such as the M-249 Squad Automatic Weapon, or SAW, is effective at 800 meters for individual targets.

The difference between the two is enormous from a lethality standpoint. On the battlefield, for instance, an M-4 rifle is a semiautomatic rifle. Training manuals suggest 12 to 15 rounds a minute for sustained firing, which would avert the risk of its barrel overheating.

The SAW fires the same 5.56mm caliber ammunition with metal links attached to the rounds. Manuals suggest 100 rounds for sustained fire, though 200 rounds can be used in dangerous combat situations.

A typical scenario in Iraq and Afghanistan would involve a SAW gunner firing an entire starter belt of 100 linked rounds at the beginning of a firefight to quickly suppress the enemy. It would take only a few seconds to fire the belt.

The high number of firearms found at the hotel suggest a concern for overheating rifle barrels. The barrels can reach several hundred degrees, turning orange and even blue as rounds travel thousands of feet per second through them.

Automatic weapons such as the SAW and the larger M-240 have lever releases on the barrel, allowing one to be swapped for another using a oven-mitt-like glove.

The National Rifle Association says Nevada law allows the purchase of machine guns and silencers in compliance with federal law and regulations.

Best Tourism Videos of 2017 Highlight the Art of Storytelling

Whether it’s a group of influencers exploring a thousand-year-old mountaintop mosque in Tunisia or hiking through the Atacama Desert in Chile, the winners of the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s annual video competition show off each country’s landscapes and how seeing them with friends makes all the difference.

The UN agency announced the winners earlier this month during its General Assembly in Chengdu, China. UNWTO member states’ national tourism boards could submit videos from national tourism marketing campaigns covering 2011 to the present, although all winning videos were published within the past year.

The UNWTO picked five winners from Africa, East Asia/Pacific, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas, culled from 63 videos submitted.  The U.S., Canada and Australia aren’t UNWTO members and weren’t eligible to participate in the contest. The UNWTO also opened voting to the general public for two weeks leading up to the General Assembly and the people’s choice award went to the East Asia/Pacific winner, Wonderful Indonesia’s “The Journey to a Wonderful World” video.

See all winning videos embedded below.

The five winning videos attracted a combined 1.2 million YouTube views alone. Some videos, or parts of them, ran as TV commercials.

Tourism boards are using these marketing campaign videos to appeal to a broad range of travelers and they reflect different regional approaches. Some videos, however, such as Colombia’s meetings and conventions video and Serbia’s Danube River cruising video, are clearly targeting niche audiences.

Among all of the videos, there’s a sense of being immersed in the destination through the use of a point of view perspective that makes viewers feel like they’re along for the ride.

Many of the videos drive the point that these destinations are best seen and explored with friends and family. Most of the destinations highlight their beautiful natural environments and outdoor activities. The videos portray these attributes through high-adrenaline adventure and moments of calm reflection that leave many travelers amazed that some countries’ landscapes and climates can run a wide spectrum, such as in Chile’s “Find Your Chile – Chile is Waiting For You” video.

Not all, though. France’s video gives more attention to the country’s art and entertainment offerings while Japan explores the intersection of the country’s past, present and future.

Below are the winning videos. These videos are excellent case studies for tourism bureaus about the future of video storytelling. They reinforce people’s connections to nature and and how experiencing that as a traveler is a highlight of any trip.

People’s Choice Award and East Asia/Pacific Winner: Indonesia – ‘The Journey to a Wonderful World’

Louis Armstrong’s voice and classic song, “What a Wonderful World,” is a familiar melody that brings about feelings of comfort, nostalgia and peace. Making Indonesia seem more familiar and comfortable is what this video, published in November 2016, aims to accomplish. It definitely romanticizes dance and relaxation as signatures of the country; the video shows travelers that they can truly get away from it all, and can also visit bustling metropolises if they wish.

The video subtly references tourism’s positive benefits on local populations and how people-to-people interactions are vital for the health of the global travel industry. Perhaps this is why Indonesia’s video won the people’s choice award; positive tourist interactions with locals help bridge geopolitical divides. Locals in the video also seem happy to see tourists and, given what’s happening in some European cities regarding overtourism, it’s important to remember that much of the world is still looking for ways to attract more tourists to their destinations.

Africa Winner: Tunisia: ‘#TrueTunisia’

Ancient and modern Tunisia are on display in this video. Published in June 2016, It features five European YouTubers who descend on the country to learn about its ancient history and culture, including 11th-century mosques and and souks as the country once served as major Mediterranean trading post. The influencers indulge in award-winning spas and beachfront dining.

In a country that has recently suffered terrorist attacks and political unrest in the past decade, it’s refreshing to see Tunisia portrayed positively for a change. Tunisia’s seemingly endless desert, teal blue seas and verdant palm forests promote a sense of open space where people are inspired to breathe deeply and be more aware of the moment. Tunisia was also the Africa winner for the UNWTO’s video competition in 2015.

Americas Winner: Chile – ‘Find Your Chile – Chile is Waiting For You’

For us, Chile’s won for its “most likely to make us want to go there” appeal. The landscapes are the real protagonists in this storyline. And rather than using Chilean people to tell you about why they love their corners of the country, the tourism board uses travelers from around the world to give their perspectives on why Chile’s natural beauty is a magnet that keeps pulling them back in. The tourism board published the video in November 2016.

No doubt, Chile is trying to capture the attention of travelers who are concerned with how Instagram-worthy a destination is when determining whether they should go there. It’s difficult for some destinations to show rather than tell but Chile does a nice job of conveying its message and showing that while it has something for everyone, it does a great job at offering deeper experiences.

Europe Winner: Greece – ‘Greece – A 365-Day Destination’

More destinations want to market themselves as year-round destinations to spread out tourism visitation and dollars. Countries like Greece are buzzing in the warm weather but quiet in the winter; you get a sense that Greece is lively no matter what time you visit if you know where to find the action. But perhaps the real stars of the video, published in August 2017, aren’t the seasons but instead is the diversity of Greek experiences. Many travelers exclusively think of Greece’s islands but this video spotlights other parts of the country that aren’t as well-known.

Middle East Winner: Egypt – ‘This is Egypt’

Egypt’s tourism industry has suffered one setback after another over the past decade and its video avoids any talk of revolution, violence and terrorism. The video, published in October 2016, perhaps wins for “best comeback story.” It has a cohesive storyline of how the country has “a long story” that spans thousands of years.

The educational component seems to clash with the nightlife vibes that flicker on and off throughout. But a tourism board’s job is to sell the destination, when safe to do so, even if it’s not perfect and trying to put its past behind it. And if selling the bright side of Egypt is the aim, this video certainly succeeds.

US rides perfect storm to blowout Prez Cup win

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – It was the perfect storm.

As a fall evening slipped away and the most anticlimactic Sunday competition since Tiger Woods took a 10-stroke lead into the final round of the 2000 U.S. Open came to a close, the final score only told a part of the story as the Americans celebrated a 19-11 victory over the International team at the Presidents Cup.

It wasn’t nearly that close.

After three days of utter domination, the U.S. came out predictably and understandably flat on Sunday, dropping four of the first five singles matches after losing just two full points in the four team sessions.

After coming within two holes of closing out the Internationals on Saturday, the greatest American team in a generation only managed to win 4 ½ of 12 points, but on this the record books will be skewed.

A decade from now, observers will note that the Internationals lost by eight points, but that won’t even begin to paint an accurate picture of the 2017 matches.

International captain Nick Price called the U.S. dozen a juggernaut, while U.S. frontman Steve Stricker said his crew reminded him of the American team that finally stopped the European domination of the Ryder Cup in 2008 at Valhalla, only better.

The talent amassed on the red, white and blue side was undeniable, with the U.S. team featuring three of this year’s four major winners and four of the world’s top-eight ranked players. The American side was deep – deep like the 1992 U.S. Dream Team – and it was always going to be a long shot for an International team that hasn’t won since Bill Clinton was the nation’s chief executive; but in retrospect the bigger advantage went to current form, which weighed heavily in the Americans’ favor.

Presidents Cup: Articles, video and photos

Eleven of the 12 Americans played last week’s Tour Championship, as telling a sign as any that Stricker would have no problem going with a “next man up” mentality. In fact, if there was a hole in the U.S. lineup, it was Phil Mickelson, who was one of Stricker’s two captain’s picks

“This team was just an amazing bunch of guys, amazing performance. Everybody was on great form. For us to have 11 guys in the Tour Championship; everybody except Phil Mickelson was at East Lake,” Matt Kuchar cracked, a not-so-subtle jab at Mickelson (who went 3-0-1). “It was like, how many times does it happen that you get 11 out of 12? If it was only for Phil, we would have had 12 of 12, but Phil was not there.”

The Americans nearly swept the opening foursomes session, winning 3 ½ of five points, won four of five matches on Day 2, and lost just a single outright team match in Saturday’s two sessions.

“We played maybe the most on-form United States team that I can remember,” said Adam Scott, the elder statesman of the International team.

The Americans also enjoyed immediate chemistry. There will likely be volumes written about this team, which promises to carry the U.S. flag for years to come, and why they gel so seamlessly. There are natural friendships, like Justin Thomas and Rickie Fowler, who are South Florida neighbors and emerged this week as a new power pairing. There are compatible personalities, like Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed, who added a new chapter to an already impressive legacy. There are bona fide fits, like Dustin Johnson and Brooks Koepka, whose power game paired perfectly in the fourball format.

But most of all there was talent. So much talent.

“This was one of the best putting teams I’ve ever seen,” said Woods, one of Stricker’s assistant captains. “I know that they are young, they are talented, hit the ball a long way, but in the end, look at how many more putts we made. Probably from [Nos.] 15 to 18, it was pretty impressive to watch.”

And, finally, this U.S. team had its perfect captain.

Stricker was serious and subdued and kept things exceedingly simple for his players. Where Fred Couples, who captained the U.S. team to victories at three consecutive Presidents Cup, kept things relaxed; Stricker seemed to embrace an edgy aggressiveness while maintaining a quiet and conservative demeanor.

Win each session was Stricker’s simple message and he maintained that Darwinian drive even as the Americans faced a 14 1/2 to 3 1/2 point advantage heading into Sunday singles. He didn’t complicate things, didn’t overthink pairings or attempt to reinvent an already productive wheel following the U.S. Ryder Cup team’s victory last year at Hazeltine National.

“We’d be the stupidest guys on earth if we split up [Jordan] Spieth and [Patrick] Reed, [Justin Thomas] and Rickie [Fowler],” Stricker reasoned. “That’s not the thing to do.”

It’s a commonly held notion that captains receive far too much credit in victory and a disproportionate share of blame in defeat, and some might argue that it would have been difficult for any captain to mishandle this Murder’s Row; but there’s no denying that Stricker’s style was a perfect fit for this team.

“He’s just such a great leader. He’s a quiet leader but he’s a really good leader and we all respect him. We all trust him,” Dustin Johnson said. “It really has been an amazing week playing for captain Stricker. I think we would all agree that he’s been an amazing captain this week. We all love playing for him.”

Whether this team goes down as the best ever depends on what they do going forward, and Sunday’s post-match news conference included its share of questions about next year’s Ryder Cup, but for an American side that not that long ago went searching for answers with a task force, it was a victory on many levels.

Those dark days seemed like a lifetime ago as the Americans boarded the ferry back to Manhattan and a celebration that promised to spill well into Monday morning.

Sunday’s swing toward the Internationals will blur the historical significance of the U.S. domination at Liberty National. Although the winning margin was not a record, the performance was unquestionably record breaking.

It was the perfect storm.

Catalonia’s Independence Vote Descends Into Chaos and Clashes

Recent opinion polls suggest that slightly less than half of Catalonia’s 7.5 million people support separation from Spain, but separatist parties won a majority in the region’s Parliament in 2015 and their influence has grown.

Many say Catalonia would face a perilous and uncertain future outside Spain, the market for most of the region’s goods, and would not be assured of being readmitted to the European Union.

Others complained that the thrust for independence had deepened divisions within the region, whose vibrant economy has attracted families from inside and outside Spain.

Olga Noheda, a doctor in Centelles, said one of her patients, an older man, began crying in her examination room, and explained that his granddaughter had begun expressing dislike for Spaniards.

“He was very sad, because he didn’t understand where it all came from,” she said. “He migrated to Catalonia many years ago, from Seville, and he was wondering if his granddaughter was aware that he was a Spaniard.”

In Barcelona’s Placa de Catalunya late Sunday night, voters chanted and celebrated the referendum, even if it remained very unclear how the separatist leaders hope to enforce its outcome.

“We’ve shown our way of making politics and changing things is very different to that of Spain,” said Marti Feliu, 21, a history student at Barcelona University. “It’s our opportunity to create a different kind of country, even if we don’t yet know exactly how and when.”

Trump says Tillerson is ‘wasting his time’ on talks with North Korea

President Donald Trump says he told Secretary of State Rex Tillerson that any negotiations with Kim Jong Un, whom Trump called “Little Rocket Man,” are a waste of time.

In an apparent response to news this weekend that the U.S. has open channels of communication with North Korea, the president also tweeted Sunday that Tillerson should save his energy because the U.S. will « do what has to be done. »

Tillerson, speaking off-camera with reporters during his trip to China’s capital, said Saturday that the administration is speaking to North Korea « directly, through our own channels. »

« We have lines of communication to Pyongyang. We’re not in a dark situation, a blackout, » he said from the residence of the U.S. ambassador in Beijing. « We can talk to them. We do talk to them. »

Tillerson said the Trump administration has « three channels » open with the regime of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

The top U.S. diplomat also said that broad sanctions against North Korea over its nuclear program « are beginning to have an effect. »

« We are seeing from what we can observe, and the Chinese are telling us, that it is having some effect, and [the Chinese] have a pretty close view of it, » Tillerson said. « But I also think it’s the uniform voice coming from the international community. There is almost no one aligning with North Korea on this nuclear program of theirs. »

This is not the first time Trump and his secretary of state have publicly differed in their statements on North Korea.

In June, Tillerson and Defense Secretary James Mattis said the U.S. and China were pushing ahead on applying diplomatic pressure North Korea. At the time, Trump tweeted that while he appreciated China’s efforts but they have “not worked out.”

On Saturday the secretary of state described the situation with Pyongyang as « overheated » after back-and-forth barbs between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un. Tillerson blamed North Korea for the rising tensions, saying that if it would stop testing missiles, that « would calm down things a lot. »

Following Tillerson’s remarks, U.S. Department of State spokesperson Heather Nauert issued a statement Saturday saying there are « several open channels » in which the Trump administration « can communicate » with the North Korean government, but officials in Pyongyang so far « have shown no indication that they are interested in or are ready for talks regarding denuclearization. »

« U.S. diplomats have several open channels in which we can communicate with officials within the North Korean regime, » Nauert said in the statement. « Despite assurances that the United States is not interested in promoting the collapse of the current regime, pursuing regime change, accelerating reunification of the peninsula or mobilizing forces north of the DMZ, North Korean officials have shown no indication that they are interested in or are ready for talks regarding denuclearization. »

Bowing to the Inevitable, Advertisers Embrace Advocate Role

Mr. Hudson said he was proud that most of his senior team is made up of either women or ethnic minorities but he has wondered, “Do I do that quietly or do I become more public about it?” He added, “The for-profit private sector is going to be playing a stronger role in the next number of years at trying to reset the bar, for fear that the bar shifts in such a way that it’s not healthy for society.”

A separate panel focused on the representation of women in commercials and highlighted recent research from the advertising company J. Walter Thompson New York and the Geena Davis Institute that showed men get far more screen time in ads compared with women, who are less likely to be depicted as funny or even employed.

“People don’t trust government and big authorities, they’re looking for companies to take courageous stands and really do more good in the world,” said Debra Bass, president of global marketing services at Johnson Johnson Consumer. “We know advertising creates stereotypes which shape culture and it’s our responsibility to change culture so more women will have education and economic empowerment and less abuse.”

That prompted Jeffrey Rothman, vice president of marketing strategy and innovation at Dannon, to bring up the yogurt brand’s sponsorship of the N.F.L., which recently dealt with President Trump’s criticism of sideline demonstrations by the league’s players during the national anthem.

“We’re in an environment where, wherever you stand on the political spectrum, I think it’s clear to all of us right now that we’re looking to actors outside of our government to help drive the social justice agenda,” Mr. Rothman said. “To be part of an organization like ours and in this partnership with the N.F.L. is allowing us to start to do that.”

Video — from clips on a smartphone to Netflix on television — was also a hot topic. Tara Walpert Levy, vice president of agency and media solutions at YouTube and Google, and Carolyn Everson, vice president of global marketing solutions at Facebook, each gave presentations that highlighted the draw of videos, and by extension, video advertising, on their sites.

Both companies have been smarting lately. Major brands like ATT and Coca-Cola pulled ads from YouTube earlier this year after they were discovered on videos promoting offensive content like hate speech. More recently, Facebook disclosed that Russians had used fake accounts and online ads to fan divisive issues during the presidential campaign. The social network has also had to respond to the revelation that advertisers were able to target users who used terms like “Jew hater” to describe themselves.

Still, video is too enticing for issues like those to scare advertisers away.

“You just have what I would actually liken to a gold rush in the content space,” Rob Master, vice president of global media, categories and partnerships at Unilever, which owns brands like Dove soap and Lipton tea, said during a presentation. “The amount of money pouring into producing and developing content is unbelievable,” he said, naming Facebook, YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime, Fox and Hulu.

Marketers are watching that, as well as how younger generations are using their smartphones, and figuring out where they might fit in, he said.

“What is the commercial model for a video on a phone or on the web across these different platforms?” Mr. Master said. “Today, some platforms call video what I would call a digital moving billboard. So how do we think about that in terms of media — how do you plan or buy for that?”

There were also, of course, discussions that did not touch on seismic industry or societal shifts.

During a panel on Instagram, the actress Sarah Jessica Parker, who sells goods under a namesake label, described how she decides to make work-related posts to her highly-followed account.

“I feel sort of honor-bound to the people who follow me to not exploit the relationship, not to trade on the relationship,” she said. “I feel better talking about the business on our business pages frankly.” But when it does happen, she said, “I try to be very thoughtful and plot out those occasions where I invade the personal with business.”

Snapchat introduced a new way for advertisers to reach its audience — essentially, by placing a branded three-dimensional product into whatever users are filming through the Snapchat app.

Imran Khan, Snap’s chief strategy officer, said that Snapchat users were creating more than three billion pictures and videos a day.

“The problem with text is that text never captured your true voice — text might grab your attention but it never captured your imagination,” he said. “As a result, the way we communicate is changing, it’s becoming visual. With texting, I always had to translate my feelings over text. Now with camera, I can do that instantly.”

An earlier version of this article misstated the timing of the announcement of a settlement between the California attorney general’s office and Gatorade. The announcement was in September, not October.

The filming features in the Nokia 8 android-powered smartphone prove the brand is trying to pull in customers that use live social media video streaming.

Nokia’s first high-end android smartphone, the blue Nokia 8, will hit Spark shelves on Tuesday with a $999 price tag.

It features dual-sight – the ability to film through the front and rear camera simultaneously, creating a split-screen video or photo.

Spark customer and marketing general manager Clive Ormerod said the device’s live streaming capability is likely to attract Millennial buyers.

Only the polished blue Nokia 8 will be available at Spark from Tuesday.

Spark customer and marketing general manager Clive Ormerod says customers could be hesitant towards the Nokia brand because of its historical failure to keep up with smartphone trends.

Technology analysts said Nokia would face tough competition against smartphone makers Apple and Samsung that have established market leading positions.

The arrival of the range comes one month after Apple’s latest iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X reveal, and two month’s after Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 launch.

In an effort to climb from its third position in the global smartphone market, Huawei released its P10 range in March this year.

Ormerod said only the Nokia 8 would be competing with Apple’s iPhone’s or Samsung’s Galaxy smartphones.

He said the varying price points of Nokia’s range appealed to a variety of customers.

The Nokia 6 comes in black or silver and will cost $349. The Nokia 3 comes only in black and is the cheapest in the range, costing $249.

Ormerod said Nokia could face some backlash from customers’ negative connotations with the traditional brand that failed to keep up with smartphone makers.

Once a leading mobile phone maker, Nokia sold to Microsoft in 2014.

HMD Global acquired the manufacturing and distribution assets of the former Nokia phone business from Microsoft last year.

But Ormerod said Spark was excited to reintroduce the brand’s revamped technology to New Zealand customers who would decide the brand’s fate here.

He said he expected sales to go « pretty well ».

« People that grew up with a nokia are going to see something quite new. »

The Latest: 73 percent of Catalonia vote centers open

BARCELONA, Spain — The Latest on Catalonia’s plans to hold a referendum Sunday on breaking away from Spain (all times local):

11:30 a.m.

Catalonia’s government spokesman says that the disputed independence referendum is underway in 73 percent of about 6,000 polling stations despite a police crackdown to try to halt the vote and technological obstacles.

Jordi Turull called for Catalans to remain calm and patient but to defend “in a civic and peaceful manner” their right to vote after riot police blocked voting in some polling centers and confiscated ballot boxes amid clashes with protesting voters. Police have also fired rubber projectiles at protesters in Barcelona.

Turull said that “the world has seen the violence of the Spanish state,” calling actions by the police as “repression that is a reminder of the Franco era” in reference to Spain’s dictatorship from 1939-1975.

Turull said the Spanish government’s representative in Catalonia, Enric Millo, should resign over the handling of the crackdown.

11:10 a.m.

Spanish riot police have fired rubber projectiles at protesters outside a Barcelona polling station during Catalonia’s disputed independence referendum. Several people have been wounded.

The officers fired the projectiles while trying to clear protesters who were trying to impede National Police cars from leaving after police confiscated ballot boxes from the voting center.

An AP photographer witnessed how several people had been injured during the scuffles outside Barcelona’s Rius i Taule school, where some voters had cast ballots before police arrived.

Manuel Conedeminas, a 48-year-old IT manager who tried to block police from driving away with the ballot boxes, said agents had kicked them before using their batons and firing the projectiles, which were ball-shaped.

10:45 a.m.

Several members of the Catalan regional government cast their ballots in a banned referendum on independence from Spain that became messy as riot police moved Sunday to halt voting in several polling centers.

Catalan regional president Carles Puigdemont voted in Cornella de Terri, near the northern city of Girona, after police took over control of the original polling center where he was due to appear, his spokesman Joan Maria Pique told The Associated Press.

Puigdemont has spearheaded the separatist politicians’ push to go ahead with the vote, despite a Constitutional Court suspension and fierce opposition by central authorities.

Regional vice president Oriol Junqueras also found his designated polling station taken over by police and moved to a different location where he eventually voted, regional broadcaster TV3 said.

10:25 a.m.

Electoral volunteers at polling centers in Catalonia’s disputed referendum say they are unable to access census data because the website that hosted it is down, while internet service has been cut in some of the stations.

Technicians are working to set up new domains for the website where electoral managers need to register polling data, said Jordi Sole, a 48-year-old historian who displayed an accreditation with the regional government’s logo and said that was at the Collaso high school in Barcelona to assist with the voting.

Guillem Castillo, an 18-year-old engineering student designated as an electoral official there, said technical problems halted the voting shortly after it opened.

Spanish media reported similar problems with internet in polling centers across Catalonia.

___

10:10 a.m.

Spanish riot police have forcefully removed a few hundred would-be voters from a polling station at a school in Barcelona.

Daniel Riano was inside when the police pushed aside a large group gathered outside busted in the Estela school’s front door.

The 54-year-old Riano said that “we were waiting inside to vote when the National Police used force to enter, they used a mace to break in the glass door and they took everything.”

He said that “one policeman put me in a headlock to drag me out, while I was holding my wife’s hand. It was incredible. They didn’t give any warning.”

Ferran Miralles said a crowd scuffled with police outside as they formed a tight perimeter around the door. Miralles said “they were very aggressive. They pushed me out of the way.”

Elsewhere in Barcelona, police have detained several people outside the Treball voting center amid scuffles on the street. Officers dragged some of the protesters away and detained them.

Spanish riot police have smashed their way into a polling station in Catalonia where the regional leader was expected to show up to vote in the disputed independence referendum.

Civil Guard riot police with shields have used a hammer to smash the glass of the front door of the voting center and lock cutters to force their way in. Scuffles erupted outside between police and people waiting to vote at the polling center in Sant Julia de Ramis, near the Catalan city of Girona.

There were no immediate reports of injuries. Television footage showed police using batons to disperse the crowds gathered outside the local sports center.

Catalan president Carles Puigdemont was scheduled to vote in the Sant Julia de Ramis sports center at 9.30 a.m. (0730 GMT; 3:30 a.m. EDT).

Puigdemont has spearheaded the separatist politicians’ push to go ahead with the vote, despite a Constitutional Court suspension and fierce opposition by central authorities.

Polling has begun in a banned referendum on Catalonia’s independence, with the first voters casting ballots amid cheers in some of the designated polling stations.

Parents, children and activist volunteers had occupied some of the 2,315 schools and other facilities to avoid closure from police acting on court orders.

Spain’s Constitutional Court ordered the vote to be suspended and central authorities say it’s illegal. Regional separatist leaders have pledged to hold it anyway, promising to declare independence if the “yes” side wins, and have called on 5.3 million eligible voters to cast ballots.

Catalan officials say that voters will be allowed to cast ballots at any polling station, rather than a designated one as previously announced, as many locations have been sealed off by police.

Regional government spokesman Jordi Turull says the last-minute system will allow the 5.3 million eligible voters to cast a ballot and avoid repeated votes.

Turull says that Catalans will be able to vote with ballots printed at home if needed, announcing that authorities had printed new ones after 5 million paper ballots were confiscated by police. He also said that a group of “academics and professionals” would serve as election observers.

The electoral board appointed by the regional parliament was disbanded last week to avoid hefty fines by Spain’s Constitutional Court.

Ballot boxes began arriving at some polling stations for a disputed referendum on Catalonia’s split from Spain that is being met with fierce opposition from Spanish authorities.

Police acting on court orders have been trying to confiscate ballot boxes for weeks as the crackdown to halt the vote intensified.

On Friday, officials unveiled a prototype of the plastic ballot boxes with a logo of the regional government.

Spain’s Constitutional Court ordered the vote to be suspended and central authorities say it’s illegal. Hopeful voters have been occupying out some of the designated voting stations to avoid police taking control and closing them off.

Some of the Catalans who are defying court orders to vote in a disputed referendum on their region’s secession from Spain say they want to send a strong message of displeasure with central authorities.

Activist Augsti Gil says there were no ballots or ballot boxes in Barcelona’s Joan Fuster high school where more than a hundred people have joined another hundred who spent the night occupying the designated polling station.

Gil says they expect materials to arrive Sunday morning ahead of the 9 a.m. opening of polls.

Joaquim Bosch, a 73 year-old retiree at Princep de Viana high school, where a crowd of 20 people was growing says he is uneasy about a possible police response to the crowds.

Bosch says: “I have come to vote to defend the rights of my country, which is Catalonia.”

OJ Simpson released after serving 9 years in Nevada prison

LAS VEGAS — Former football legend O.J. Simpson became a free man Sunday after serving nine years for a botched hotel room heist in Las Vegas that brought the conviction and prison time he avoided in the killings of his ex-wife and her friend after his 1995 acquittal in the « trial of the century » in Los Angeles.

Simpson was released at 12:08 a.m. PDT from Lovelock Correctional Center in northern Nevada, state prisons spokeswoman Brooke Keast told The Associated Press. She said she did not know the driver who met Simpson upon his release and didn’t know where Simpson was immediately headed in his first hours of freedom.

« I don’t have any information on where he’s going, » said Keast, who watched as Simpson signed documents and was let go.

Florida AG doesn’t want O.J. to return to state

Attorney General Pam Bondi sent a letter to Florida Department of Corrections Secretary Julie L. Jones on Friday saying that she should immediately tell Nevada officials that Florida objects to O.J. Simpson serving his parole in Florida.

  • O.J. Simpson granted release by parole board

O.J. Simpson has been granted parole nine years into a 33-year sentence after being convicted of kidnapping, armed robbery and assault with a deadly weapon while trying to steal sports memorabilia.

  • The Florida Department of Corrections, however, said officials had not received a transfer request or required documents, and the attorney general said the state didn’t want him.

« The specter of his residing in comfort in Florida should not be an option, » Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement on Friday. « Our state should not become a country club for this convicted criminal. »

Simpson lost his home near Miami to foreclosure in 2012. But two of his children, Justin and Sydney, also live in Florida.

He could live at least temporarily in Las Vegas, where a friend let Simpson use his home for five weeks during his robbery trial.

His five years of parole supervision could be reduced with credits for good behavior.

It’s a new chapter for the one-time pop culture phenomenon whose fame was once again on display when the major TV networks carried his parole hearing live.

He told officials that leading a group of men into a 2007 armed confrontation was an error in judgment he would not repeat.

He told the parole board that he led a « conflict-free life, » an assertion that angered many who believe he got away with killing his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman in Los Angeles in 1994.

Simpson was once an electrifying running back dubbed « Juice » who won the Heisman Trophy as the nation’s best college football player for USC in 1968 and became one of the NFL’s all-time greats with the Buffalo Bills.

Handsome and charming, he also provided commentary on « Monday Night Football, » became the face of Hertz rental-car commercials and built a movie career with roles in the « Naked Gun » comedies and other films.

Simpson fell from grace when he was arrested in the slayings, after a famous « slow-speed » Ford Bronco chase on California freeways. His subsequent trial became a live-TV sensation that fascinated viewers with its testimony about a bloody glove that didn’t fit and unleashed furious debate over race, police and celebrity justice.

A jury swiftly acquitted him, but two years later, Simpson was found liable in civil court for the killings and ordered to pay $33.5 million to survivors, including his children and Goldman’s family.

He is still on the hook for the judgment, which now amounts to about $65 million, according to a Goldman family lawyer.

On Sept. 16, 2007, he led five men he barely knew to the Palace Station casino in Las Vegas in an effort to retrieve items that Simpson insisted were stolen after his acquittal in the 1994 slayings. Two of the men with Simpson in Las Vegas carried handguns, although Simpson still insists he never knew anyone was armed. He says he only wanted to retrieve personal items, mementoes and family photos.

He went to prison in 2008, receiving a stiff sentence that his lawyers said was unfair.

If the nation’s Simpson obsession waned for a while, it resurged last year with the Emmy-winning FX miniseries, « The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story, » and the Oscar-winning documentary « O.J.: Made in America. »
