Atresmedia, Mediaset surf Spanish online video wave

Atresmedia’s performance last year showed an average 12.2 million unique users per month through all the group’s video sites, 27% more than the 2015 average. In addition, according to data from comScore, December closed with 14.5 million unique users for Atresmedia, indicating that there is still room for growth in the online video market.

Regarding unique users, Atresmedia has drawn, on average, 16% more viewers than Mediaset; only in December did Atresmedia’s online platforms total 4.3 million more unique users than its rival.

However, Mediaset’s strength lies in its users’ loyalty. While Atresmedia served 32 videos and 115 minutes per user per month, Mediaset’s viewers watched 43 pieces and 228 minutes per month.

In fact, Mediaset has served over 95 million online videos per month during 2016, while Atresmedia delivered 80 million pieces.

Beyond this battle, Mediaset has a safe bet in Telecinco’s online content. The network, which also leads Spain’s free-to-air (FTA) audience, reached 7.6 million unique users per month. Atresmedia’s antena3.com didn’t come close to this figure, even during its best month, December, which saw 6.7 million users.

Atresmedia’s best news is with Flooxer, an online video-only network launched in November 2015 which has become a springboard for Spanish online video creators. The platform neared million unique users per month and served over six million videos during its first year on air.
