Producing and Measuring High-Quality Online Video

By 2019, Cisco predicts that 80 percent of all internet traffic will be video content. This is great news if you’re a brand looking for effective ways to engage with your target audiences. However, competition for viewers is increasing. Even with significant advances in video technology, content owners and publishers continually face obstacles to providing video that is viewable on any device, anywhere in the world. Viewers demand the same broadcast-quality experience for online video that they get from traditional television, and buffering increasingly is a major—and literal—turn-off. In fact, a recent study by Nice People at Work, a big data IT company that uses real-time data to help its customers deliver TV-quality online video, found that when viewers experience a buffer ratio higher than 2 percent, their risk of churn increases by 30 percent. This puts a significant burden on publishers. This eWEEK slide show, using industry information from Limelight Networks, a San Francisco-based content delivery network (CDN) service provider, sheds light on how to establish and measure video quality of experience (QoE).
